Looks like Twitter is about to become even worse: its failure to pay for these services could ruin its ability to automatically detect and remove child porn and gratuitous gore images.

@profcarroll In fact, a hypothetical bridge that scoops up and posts content, which it does not own to a corporate platform, is also in violation of that platform's terms of service wherein the poster guarantees that they have the right to the content they are posting.
So, it turns out that inventing your own protocol when better (read: secure) ones already exist may not actually be the best of ideas. Who knew‽
Allowing posts be their own parent? Great idea -- let's do that.
Allowing IDs of . and .. when those IDs become part of the URL? Brilliant.
Allowing follows on a like? Sure, fuck it, sounds good, throw it on the pile; maybe we can (spoiler: we can) also let a like be the parent of a post while we're at it.
I am having way too much fun with this.
What makes us smart?
"How did humans become clever enough to live in nearly every major ecosystem on earth, create vaccines against deadly plagues, explore the oceans depths, and routinely traverse the globe at 30,000 feet in aluminum tubes while nibbling on roasted almonds? ...human brilliance emerges not from our innate brainpower or raw computational capacities, but from the sharing of information in communities and networks over generations. I never thought I'd call a high school valedictorian metal but that was before this kid called for school board members to resign over their participation in racist and queerphobic oppression targeting students during his valedicory address.
The kids are out there putting it all on the line, fighting not to be dragged into a theocratic future. Adults could learn a thing or two.
Calling for the school board to resign at graduation. Fuck yeah he did.
The only way I'm finding out about #KeepEyesOnSudan is Twitter. That's where refugees, Sudanese citizens & diaspora are calling out bodies like the UNHCR & western embassies etc. E.g. this letter from Ethiopian & Eritrean refugees.
Some journalists I got here have decided its not wroth it for them, while a few like @zekuzelalem are staying :)
The most important use of social media for me is exactly this so I hope that we can get this platform there. https://refugeesinsudan.org/blog/f/open-letter-to-unhcr
According to its creators, this emerging tech is god-like in its abilities. But the devil is in the details. We spoke to several African AI researchers who see, instead, patterns of exploitation and extraction.
