First bumble bee of the season today!

A few catkins on the highest branches of a nearby Goat willow (Salix caprea) have opened and a solitary bee was buzzing around them, too far from me for a picture, sadly.

Goat willows are perceived as rather mundane trees, but their catkins will soon be surrounded by hungry bees at a time of year when there aren't many other native species flowering in North Highland.

My design ideas for the new British 🇬🇧 #pound #notes 💷! With animals typical and popular in the #UK!

A beautiful bright day today, but maybe snow later.

As the days lengthen, I now start my almost-daily constitutional walk at 7 am, rather than midday, which was the situation since summer. While out walking, I heard my first blackbird singing for its breeding territory today, which seems early but was nice to hear.

The squirrels have been visiting the peanut feeder non-stop so far today, hence the pictures from the motion-activated ipcam .

I don't wish to be too dramatic after only four days of snow, but having now posted my pictures, I must get back to writing my diary:

"Dear Diary,

Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale, but surely, surely, a great rich country like ours will see that those who are dependent on us are properly provided for....."

It's been a snowy few days here in Foyers and too cold outside to make any journeys that aren't completely necessary. I have spent the time improving the security of my VPS (anyone else subject to a distributed brute-force Wordpress login attack on Christmas Eve?)

I also made a few trips outside to take some pictures.

Apollo 17's Moonship

Image Credit: Apollo 17, NASA, (Image Reprocessing: Andy Saunders)

Explanation: Awkward and angular looking, Apollo 17's lunar module Challenger was designed for flight in the near vacuum of space. Digitally enhanced and reprocessed, this picture taken from Apollo 17's command module America shows Challenger's ascent stage in lunar orbit. Small reaction control thrusters are at the sides of the moonship with the bell of the ascent rocket engine underneath. The hatch that allowed access to the lunar surface is seen at the front, with a round radar antenna at the top. Mission commander Gene Cernan is clearly visible through the triangular window. This spaceship performed gracefully, landing on the Moon and returning the Apollo astronauts to the orbiting command module in December of 1972. So where is Challenger now? While its descent stage remains at the Apollo 17 landing site in the Taurus-Littrow valley, the ascent stage pictured was intentionally crashed nearby after being jettisoned from the command module prior to the astronauts' return to planet Earth.
