Community discussion from Inverness

The Bike Shed screening of Fires and Fascism offered a diverse range of topics. As ever there are threads that link them all!

Burning of muirs is (sorry...) a hot topic. While there's traditional land management which includes intentional burning, how do bloodsports - grouse shooting and the like - fit into this! Wealthy landowners are a small proportion of the population and yet, they have a lot of the land, on which they do these activities.

A sense of belonging should be accessible to everyone, and some raised the positive perspective that XR has enhanced a feeling of connection for autistic people.

But communities may need mediation, for issues within themselves or with others. Tensions can arise over things like the location of a bottle bank - perhaps no surprise when space simply isn't accessible to everyone.

Third spaces and venues like the Bike Shed are essential. When so much space is owned by the wealthy few, where can communities find a home?

The Isle of #Lewis is the northern two-thirds of Lewis and Harris, while the Isle of #Harris is the southern one-third. The Isle of Lewis is usually flatter, though the two sides of the island are actually divided by largely impassable mountains running in an east-west direction. While the area is today part of Na h-Eileanan Siar, or the #WesternIsles #OuterHebrides, the traditional counties had been divided between #Ross and #Cromarty with Lewis and #Inverness with Harris.

First bumble bee of the season today!

A few catkins on the highest branches of a nearby Goat willow (Salix caprea) have opened and a solitary bee was buzzing around them, too far from me for a picture, sadly.

Goat willows are perceived as rather mundane trees, but their catkins will soon be surrounded by hungry bees at a time of year when there aren't many other native species flowering in North Highland.

The Pt. Reyes Muted

I love playing with this particular subject. The boat has been slowing deteriorating for as long as I can remember. I first shot this boat a few years ago and tend to stop every time I go out to Point Reyes.
I removed the color from the boat so that I could isolate it against the green rolling hills and the blue sky of the Marin County countryside.
