Black lives matter. Women's rights are human rights. COVID is airborne. Vaccines work.

3/3 Learn to repair instead of replace, to grow your own, to cook your own food, to entertain yourself, to base activities on your natural skills and environment, that sort of thing. Walk in the woods. Be creative.

You may have heard the statistic that if only 3.5% of a population are engaged in a protest, things will change. If you have been wondering how this "magical percentage" might work, this sort of effort can be an important factor.

2/3 When enough people join in, its effects will be obvious.

It can be effective even if done silently, although word-of-mouth will help it grow.

It is also hierarchical. As individuals stop buying from other individuals or companies, the other individuals and companies will stop buying from wholesalers, etc.

The effort is certainly sacrificial, but it is a sacrifice that each individual can manage within their own parameters, and it may well bring about its own growth and benefits.

1/3 A potentially powerful form of expression is for each of us to stop spending money on anything that isn't absolutely essential. It requires no coordination, scheduling, or timing among participants, just a commitment. It can grow organically, simply by individuals sharing the idea across their social contacts. It can be done in conjunction with other efforts without diluting them. As the movement grows, it will become more and more effective.

It doesn't even require formal publicity.

I don't have a lot to offer from here in Australia on all the global horrors, from #Gaza to #Minneapolis and so much more. Except that I think, in addition to what many of us are already doing as personal, political and community action, the most unifying (and effective, if enough take part) thing we can do around the world is the #SpendingStrike idea. Divert as much of our spending as we possibly can, as quickly as we possibly can, *away* from fossil fuel corporations, tech giants, airline companies, huge food and retail conglomerates, etc, and *towards* small, community, local, artisanal, sole proprietor, recycled, market stall, and homegrown enterprises. We can start this *today.* We can ramp up our efforts as we go. We can do it permanently. We can get more creative about how to do it. We can get loud about why we're doing it. We can refuse to contribute to the ecosystem- and humanity-destroying system that is threatening our future. #JustStopOil #StopGenocide #StopIce

We need those who claim to be "left" to stop punching down on the disabled, covid cautious and immune compromised.

Masking is resistance.
It's community care.

The ruling class wants you sick and weak so you won't fight back.

Healthcare is being gutted.

There's never been a better time to mask

Respirators work, though, if you wear them when you're out and about, if you have to be out and about. Big fan of the respies—or 'rators, if you prefer to butch up the cutesy—and big fan of fans with filters. You can avoid a whole mess of Covid by wearing respirators and filtering the air. If you don't have the means to stay home and watch endless television.
Today David Brooks said Republicans "are the party of shrinking government", which is true if you understand that to mean they aren't shrinking the *power* of government at all, they are just shrinking the number of people who control that power.
