https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Fascism_Works

📢 We've sat down with our artist @dopatwo and created a sticker pack for @signalapp. Now you can send cute elephants to your friends, and promote the #fediverse at the same time. We ❤️ Signal, too!

https://signal.art/addstickers/#pack_id=43a9c3e16e24b2f182e2d3e03a7e1338&pack_key=87a129905fbe7371568eef6485f93a81b7569a963bf711063bf804123a075083

I'm sure promoting the centralized @signalapp will never come back to bite @Mastodon in the ass.

@dopatwo

@ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon

Me too hope one day to see signal open in decentralization, but to avoid "switching fatigue" we must try to avoid jumping from one app to another for "normal people" as such continuing recommending signal is paramount.

but yeah having a decentralized backup as secure is a top (not element as their default are horrible).

@ElysianEve @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon It would be nice if there was a federated/decentralized alternative that's as good as Signal (ease-of-use + security + feature set). Unfortunately there isn't.
@Natanox @ElysianEve @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon I found this an interesting site in order to make a decision on which messaging apps to use (a mix of Signal and Session for my own scenarios). Might be of interest to others too (?). https://www.securemessagingapps.com/
Secure Messaging Apps Comparison | Privacy Matters

This site compares secure messaging apps from a security & privacy point of view. These include Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Skype, Signal, Simplex, Google Messenger, Threema, Riot, Wire, Telegram, and Wickr

@healthiswealth @ElysianEve @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon That's nice, lacks a few though (e.g. Briar).
Unfortunately if you want mass adoption you really need the jack of all trades. It's phenomenally hard work to combine all three aspects mentioned earlier, especially if you also want it to not use a classical centralized approach. Matrix attempted to do this and it's a buggy mess ever since. Other projects usually let go of either ease-of-use or features.

@Natanox

@ElysianEve @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon Hi. It's a good start for some I thought especially since it's easy to visually compare the ones it lists. I've not visited it for a while to be honest so not sure it's fully up to date either (scrolling this site earlier on my phone was dreadful) & yes no Briar. There is also the privacy vs security aspect which are two different things of course :)

@gaufff @Natanox @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon @delta The base problem remain, privacy fatigue (meaning that when you ask someone using another app), stick to one remain the best to not fatigue them

@ElysianEve yep, absolutely the "fatigue" doesn't come from someone asking them to switch to Telegram, then Signal, when that one gets bad the next centralized phone-number based app that is "not enshitified yet"...

@gaufff @Natanox @ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon @delta

@ElysianEve @signalapp @Mastodon @ondra @dopatwo

not element as its terrible*

* and can't really be saved
@alexia @signalapp @Mastodon @ondra @dopatwo The issue with Element (matrix) it's the fact the default settings are horrible and it's not secure at all for example every single group is not encrypted by defaults
@ElysianEve @signalapp @Mastodon @ondra @dopatwo

Sigh...

There is no PFS, it doesn't ratchet often enough.
There is no cryptographically verified membership–a malicious admin can just take over sessions and insert users into rooms
There is no metadata privacy, the server can see whom you talk to, when, which rooms you're in, etc

I could go on
The fact that some clients (because really, this depends on the client) don't encrypt by default is a small issue in comparison.

@alexia @signalapp @Mastodon @ondra @dopatwo True, if only signal would allow something like.

We allow identity server with those partner (as they need server with specifics secure enclave from intel to maintain total privacy).

Ans allow nearly everyone to host a "data server" (fully encrypted anyway).

it would be a lot better for signal resistance at it would become impossible to be downed

@ondra @dopatwo
Have fun with "Unable to decrypt message"

@ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon

Always depends on who you are asking.

Also in the future who knows which service/-s will implement Signal protocols into some fediverse compliant software that a lot of people might be using.

Trying to tell people what's gonna happen in the future is like being on thin ice...one's promises may break at any given moment due to an extremely complex world.

Signal got issues, but we seek out the lesser evil...always...

#Complexity #Hypotheticals #LesserEvil

@ondra @Mastodon @signalapp @dopatwo I find it a bit funny how "decentralization" became the buzzword on the Fediverse, just like the techbros on X or Linkedin do it with AI or blockchain. There's a reason and a market for products with decentralization or AI and without it. It's good to have alternatives. None of those features solve all problems.

@daniel Agree that decentralization isn't always necessary (or good even) and that it's better to have alternatives. It's just weird to see @Mastodon who's basically whole raison d'être is decentralization, promote @signalapp.
Centralized communication service is not as resilient, creates incredibly valuable target etc. It's just a matter of time.
I find it similarly funny to see people throw around privacy as a buzzword without any regard for freedom (of choice, repair etc.), BTW.

@dopatwo

@ondra @daniel @Mastodon @signalapp @dopatwo Signal is the gold-standard in E2EE messaging. Decentralized chat apps have proven to be buggy and unreliable over and over again. There's a reason "Unable to decrypt message" is a meme.

Until a decentralized chat app can be as stable, secure, and easy-to-use as Signal, there's no reason to bash others for recommending a centralized chat app.

@tedstechtips Sure, but that @signalapp is currently the best option for many doesn't mean it's perfect and people can't point out its flaws. @daniel @Mastodon
@ondra @tedstechtips @signalapp @daniel @Mastodon Not being "decentralized" is not a flaw. Same shit as people saying only open source stuff is worth it.
@ondra I think you're reading too much into it. They're promoting the stickers and not the app. Probably mainly because there is already a large overlap of users. Do the decentralised alternatives even support stickers?
@ondra @dopatwo @signalapp @Mastodon if you're required to use a phone number to use a service and you're not permitted to run your own server to integrate on the same network, then why promote a centralized walled garden; & they have their own cryptocurrency they did not want to tell anyone about until it was completely integrated into the codebase which they weren't publicly publishing those code changes (no transparency!). What could go wrong with such a service?
@ondra Oh my god not EVERYTHING NEEDS to be decentralized. Signal is an awesome product.
@Bluewall As long as you have a phone number, smartphone with Android or iOS, it isn't blocked in your country etc.
@ondra Signal does have a proxy parameter for that.
I don't understand your vandetta against Signal tbh.
Mastodon is promoting a free, open source top to bottom, secure and privacy oriented messaging solution. I don't see ANYTHING wrong with that.
@Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp that's a bit weird promotion. Shoudn't you ❤️ Matrix instead for obvious reasons?
@cos @Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp Does Matrix have stickers?
Creating Matrix Sticker Packs

@cos @Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp It says they're not usable by the flagship client. Sounds like stickers are still a spec proposal open since 2020.

@Gargron @cos

Yes the spec is still open there are 2 different ways how to add stickers. One for element and schildi and one for the other clients, but it is missing a singular way.

The whole furry fandom is currently not able to move to matrix because of that single issue, but it is a real issue.

@Mastodon @dopatwo

@Gargron @cos @Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp yes and no, there’s multiple standards and multiple different client implementations
@cos @Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp Matrix is problematic for obvios reasons too, but I would use them in xmpp.

@Mastodon

I would like to have it for Threema and Matrix...

@rumo @Mastodon Threema would awesome! What say you, @threemaapp ?
@rugk @rumo @Mastodon @threemaapp And all things are immutable thus Threema must remain stickerless, alas.
@Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp nice, this breaks my Signal Desktop app (in Manjaro)
@kyva @Mastodon @signalapp @dopatwo weird, it works ok for me on Fedora.
@Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp
Good…
I can't use them, as I switched from #SignalApp.
But that's it: I can't give up my peace of mind :)

@Mastodon

Is this sticker pack also available for other uses? E.g. as custom emojis for a #Fediverse instance or as graphics for websites?

@signalapp @dopatwo

@nick @Mastodon @signalapp @dopatwo yes pls, will be helpful to have a link to download them outside Signal. I will like to import them in xmpp.
@kyva @nick no plans for this at the moment but I hear and see the request, so we will see what we can do.

@andypiper
Just publish them on https://signalstickers.org/

You can download individual images there, too.

@nick right now this is a sticker pack for Signal, not for other platforms. Thanks for asking.
@Mastodon @dopatwo @signalapp I get my friends to Masto, who then experience being able to find nothing (everyone is scattered across hard -to-link /see / follow domains?), being unfound themselves, being unable to quote, only 'retoot' with zero context. I'm sure there are boffins out there who could smooth this out, being they're the biggest obstacles to enjoying Masto for new users and laypersons.
@Mastodon really cool! You should put it in an online shop as real stickers XD @dopatwo @signalapp
