The Electronic Frontier Foundation has released an open source project called Rayhunter. It is designed to run on an inexpensive (~$20) mobile hotspot and look for signs of mobile spying devices called cell-site simulators. Also known as Stingrays or IMSI catchers, they masquerade as legitimate cellphone towers, tricking phones w/in a certain radius into connecting to the device rather than a tower.

Meet Rayhunter: A New Open Source Tool from EFF to Detect Cellular Spying

Rayhunter is a new open source tool we’ve created that runs off an affordable mobile hotspot that we hope empowers everyone, regardless of technical skill, to help search out cell-site simulators (CSS) around the world.

As the federal government lets qualified workers go, this tool helps state/local governments find them

A New Tool Can Help Local Governments Hire Displaced Federal Workers - Factkeepers.com

There's normally turnover in Washington with each new administration. But now Trump and Musk want to purge huge numbers of federal workers. These folks can bring valuable skills and experience to state and local governments.

There's another wave of folks leaving #X/#Twitter, again. Two thoughts:

1) Almost no one is coming to Mastodon. It's all Bluesky, which is disappointing.

2) It's amazing the excuses folks make to avoid having to switch social platforms. I get it—I gave up 23k followers and some reputation when I abandoned Twitter. Still, the idea that it's okay to participate in a flawed platform and support its dangerous narcissistic owner just because you don't want to rebuild your network is really sad.

#FederateTheVote You can register to vote on Election Day in the following states: AK, CA, CO, CT, HI, ID, IL, IA, ME, MD, MI, MN, MT, NV, NH, NM, RI, UT, VT, VA, WA, WI, WY, + Washington, D.C.

Today would be an EXCELLENT day to confirm your voter registration status. Some states are purging voter rolls. Make sure you are ready to vote in November!

After years and years of media reports that coal is having a comeback in the UK the last coal plant will go offline in just 2 weeks.

Coal in the UK is no more.

Amazing: According to analysis by Joseph Eastman, if as little as 15% of the population were to mask, we could get #COVID19 risks as low as we pretend they are today. Here is his future model. Each line is different rates of masking. The yellow line is 15%.

Here is a masking study that's based on my recent forecast that was through January 8th. These are various levels of masking compliance using N95's with a 78% prevention rate. Do you think we should mask more? MAPS thinks so. Even if we could get to 15% it'd make a big difference

I'm actually hoping that eventually there will be an executive order for all official social media accounts for the federal executive branch, migrate to GSA owned and operated federated servers.
This cannot and should not apply to personal accounts like campaigns since they need outreach to places like tiktok and even twitter.
But this trend of official government communication being hosted by partisan private companies has to end.

First to propose, first to deliver: the AI Act enters into force today.

It sets comprehensive rules to address the risks of AI:

🔴 Unacceptable risk AI, such as social scoring, is banned
🟠 High-risk AI, like in medical devices, must meet strict requirements
🟡 Limited-risk AI, like chatbots, must inform users they are interacting with AI
🟢 Minimal risk AI, such as spam filters, can operate with no added obligations

Europeans can now safely seize the opportunities of AI: https://europa.eu/!t4QTc8

GOP: The Dems have to stop exaggerating and calling Trump fascist.

Trump: “Get out and vote. Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years. You know what? It’ll be fixed! It’ll be fine! You won’t have to vote anymore... You gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again.”

I'm sorry, what is he suggesting, exactly? #VoteBlue to save democracy.

Trump Cryptically Declares, ‘You Won’t Have to Vote Anymore’ If He Wins Second Term

Former President Donald Trump urged members of a crowd in Florida to vote and said that if he wins, they "won't have to vote anymore."
