@hannah @radicalrobit The hand tool sharpening crowd would disagree but they are too busy scraping off their arm hairs.

@vapaad Tacking on something I learned when my partner got Lymes disease: it doesn't always present as a bullseye rash! Sometimes you just get random red splotches all over your body, or a number of other possible presentations.

Also, you might have to fight against medical practitioners to make them prescribe you the antibiotics you need for treatment. Despite being in a career that exposes her to ticks on a regular basis and having a rash, it took seeing an infectious diseases specialist to actually get someone who went 'Oh yeah, that's Lymes disease' and started her on the course of treatment she needed. To say that was frustrating would be an understatement.

@cthon1c My medium size town doesn't even have the 'good' protest spot. They always opt for standing in the steps of the city government building equidistant from the two main roads in town that actually matter. Beyond ignorable.

A bit more about "soft power" (trying to write more of this in my own threads rather than more annoyingly in someone elses): it's a new concept, starting in the US in 1985 and popularized by the late 80s. This is a really significant time and place!

tl/dr: It's a neoliberal concept that was always about treating the remains of ideological competition as if they would continue once the competition was over.

@redoak I left a fairly lucrative job for a multitude of reasons, but one of them is that it no longer felt appropriate to help maintain large databases of demographic information. I'm now trying to figure out the create alternatives side of things.
Oooh, I like the imagery of a lizard dropping it's tail. Give me that on a sticker with a "Don't let them scurry away. Abolish ICE".
@vapaad As a current Aldi shopper, amen. As a former WinCo shopper, you should divert your prayers to them to expand in CO.
Without states, you might just have warlords using their armed forces to grab less powerful warlords from other continents, killing a bunch of people in the process, and dragging the less powerful warlord back for a show trial. It's a good thing that we live in a world where that doesn't happen.
@foolishowl I feel similarly and found Engine Publishing's Unframed to be helpful for this. It's a collection of essays on the topic. I particularly liked Vincent Baker's piece. https://enginepublishing.com/unframed-the-art-of-improvisation-for-game-masters
