Was the Mos Eisley “cantina” ever even referred to as such in the movie? #starwars
Sure
No? Maybe?
You’ve only ever seen the German dub, right?
I don’t know… I think I learned that on the internet.

Anyone know what this model of monitor is? Amazing industrial design that goes way harder than it has to.

if you've ever messed up a dimension or a hole position on something you're building, don't be too hard on yourself.

at least you're not the Cisco design engineer who caused an entire product line recall by placing the mode button (which resets the switch if held) directly above an RJ45 port.

You want proof that billionaires can be taxed like what Zucman proposes without impact for them?

MacKenzie Scott get 38 billions from her divorce with Bezos in 2019.

In 6 years, she gave 19.5 billions. Half of her fortune, in direct, non-charity optimized donations, and so may be the only non psychopath billionaire I heard of (hey @doctorow perhaps there's one!)

And.... She is still richer than in 2019, with now a wealth estimated at 40.5 billions.

And... Her wealth growth is totally standard for billionaires during the period.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wanted to have at least 5 Saudi universities among the top 200 in the world by 2030.

So he paid lots of scientists to falsely claim they worked in Saudi Arabia! Some got up to €70,000 a year just for pretending to work there.

Unfortunately they got caught. The newspaper El Pais exposed the scam.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia had 109 professors on the List of Highly Cited Researchers, compiled by Clarivate. After a bunch got caught, the number dropped to 26. 🤣

Someone should carefully check those 26 researchers.

In fact this "List of Highly Cited Researchers" is a fraud magnet. As of 2024, one in three apparently highly cited researchers has been caught engaging in bad practices.

This is a great example of Goodhart's Law: ""When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".

Thanks to @mansr for pointing this out.

This newspaper unveiled that Saudi universities were paying up to €70,000 a year to prestigious researchers to artificially pump up Arab institutions in international academic rankings

I think part of what makes vibe coding so attractive is one terrible decision that tech has made over and over again for fifty years, which is to ignore empirical research so completely that "is this helping?" isn't a question practitioners can even start to ask or answer in any meaningful way. (I think the other side of that coin is software engineering researchers chasing one distraction after another without caring if industry pays attention or not.)

Me, two weeks ago:

"Strange days indeed; imagine listening to a carpenter describe themselves as "hammer-first."

"But do you... build houses?"

"Incidentally, yes; but our main focus is on hitting nails with hammers."

Microsoft today:

"AI is now a fundamental part of how we work," Liuson wrote. "Just like collaboration, data-driven thinking, and effective communication, using AI is no longer optional - it's core to every role and every level."

Executive Julia Liuson recently told Microsoft managers to include internal AI tool usage when evaluating employee performance.

Well that was easy. Wanted to get data from my Acurite 5-in-1 weather station into my Pi 5.

1. Plug in @Nooelec NESDR + antenna
2. Install: sudo apt install -y rtl-433
3. Run: rtl_433

And bingo! Decoding all the weather data.

Interesting juxtaposition.
@bitsnpieces they both portray remains of nature greatness
@Hopefulinflorida Anyone see cause and effect here?! Deforestation = Shrinking Ice
@ienvision yes, you are right. they are both the product of destructive anthropogenic activity .
