UK people please respond to the government request for comment on the Home Office's "Earned Settlement" plans, deadline 12 February. https://migrantsrights.org.uk/2026/01/29/earned-settlement-consultation/
Call to Allies: Complete the ‘Earned Settlement’ Consultation - Migrants' Rights Network

New 'earned settlement' proposals left members of our Network feeling incredibly distressed. We're calling on allies to respond.

You know, when I were a wee lass in the depths of the Cotswolds, 'The AI man' was a totally different sort of gig.

Although it does help to think that the current crop of same would be far more use to the planet if they put on heavy rubber aprons and whacked off livestock for money.

@JosephMeyer I immediately respond, but not by saying I'm offended. I say it was hurtful or untrue, or say I can't believe they said that, or something else depending on what it was they said and who they are and what I think their motivations are like. I doubt saying "I'm offended" is particularly productive.
@carrideen Sam is my favourite, in part to save him from his mother. Love me a sweet himbo spouse.
@hmallett Some of us other shepherds have been through it and can offer sympathy and maybe advice, if wanted. I've heard VBNs can be a bit extra challenging. Hopefully better days ahead for your flock!

Back right in time for another great Aeon mag essay by David Wengrow on how present utopias have influenced our understanding of past societies - and how this too often stands in the way of imagining different social futures:

A revolution in archaeology is transforming our picture of past populations and the scope of human freedoms

@interfluidity I'm finding Bluesky is where I follow journalists and other commentators where I'm part of their broad audience but don't generally expect 1-1 interaction with them. Mastodon is where I mostly follow people that I actually have some kind of community with. I'd go so far as to say that for me, it's more like Bluesky is the Twitter replacement and Mastodon is the Facebook replacement.
@airwhale @humanhorseshoes @ajsadauskas High/low context also has strong status associations, especially in the USA. Low context communication tends to be coded masculine and high context feminine. In a corporate status hierarchy usually downward communication is low context and upward communication is high context. Low context communication upward will often be seen as uppity/rude.
And so it begins. #Defaidodon
@nazgul you look great!
