Wow. 1000 people boosted my post about being nice and helpful to #Mastodon newbies and a whole bunch said they wanted to be a #MastoHelper
This place is pretty awesome. 💕

Attached: 1 image I'm gonna put this out there: If you are new to #Mastodon and have found people to be hostile, or nitpicky, and just generally unhelpful please @ me and say hi. I am happy to walk you through this place, get you comfortable, be non-judgy about helping you, and help make this place your new home. I'm gonna call this #MastoHelper If others want to help newbies, lets do it together! We need to do more to make people feel welcome first, that's how you create a culture people want to be part of.

If you're a journalist and still active on Twitter, you're helping prop up a company that hates you and everything you do. Continuing to give your time and effort to Elon Musk is a self-inflicted wound that won't stop bleeding until you tend to it. Many of your readers have already exited. You should too.
Good article. Mastodon won't be immune to harming people's mental health. We can do more to help people stay healthy. #mentalhealth #sociamedia https://www.theregister.com/2023/07/20/social_overload/
Social media is too much for most of us to handle

I know, because I let it all flood in. And it was damaging to my mental health

The Register

Read an article today about why Americans think alcohol has health benefits and it's apparently another "well the French are healthy and they do X so it's healthy to do X."

So here's your periodic reminder that France (and Italy, and Sweden, and Japan, and basically every country you've seen in a "this country is so healthy, what's their secret?" headline) has universal health care.

The secret is access to health care. It's always access to health care.

Proud to announce my paper "Car as extension of whiteness: Not everyone’s skin is extended equal" is published 🥳: https://intellectdiscover.com/content/journals/10.1386/eme_00158_1

For anyone who can't afford the journal, I've updated the copy on my academia dot edu page, that is accessible for free with an account 🌻

Car as extension of whiteness: Not everyone’s skin is extended equal | Intellect

The US White flight left historically and intentionally targeted marginalized groups in cityscapes in the impoverished dust of public transport. These racialized phenomena restructured urban environments and deadened surrounding landscapes, engendering deliberately barren space too far to traverse by no- and low-income feet. Now, in the present-COVID-19 envirusment, Midwest landscapes are an eyesore, which perpetually disable and dehumanize, further denying working folks from safe social distancing and PPE in areas already plagued with socio-historical and economic disenfranchisements. Meanwhile, redlined and/or gentrified affluent spaces remain composed of mostly Whites of a certain status. This project explored present-COVID-19 human implications of cars in a nation founded upon ecological devastations.

A common argument I come across when talking about ethics in AI is that it's just a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or for evil. One familiar declaration is this one: "It's really no different from a hammer". I was compelled to make a poster to address these claims. Steal it, share it, print it and use it where you see fit.

If a hammer was like AI…

Computations will “estimate” your aim, tend to miss the nail and push for a different design. Often unnoticeably.

I'm looking for some good light undergraduate-level books/articles in English about Taiwan under the Japanese and during the White Terror. History, culture, I would even love recommendations of short fiction if you have any.

Thanks

I appear to have mastered the art of composing posts that people love to fave but never boost.

Ooh, that's interesting - noone else need ever hear of this.
