@kayakalison I was just discussing Babel with a close friend yesterday. She didn't like the ending. Let me know what you think!!

Wow.
Who could have known that without a frigging and manipulating algorithm all it's needed is to be a decent human being to connect with other people

@protecttruth @AmandaMarcotte start calling every mass shooting a Republican Gun Violence event. Republicans are the root cause of gun violence in this country. It is not an "American" problem it is a "Republican" problem. Do not let the media deflect and "both sides" the Republican Gun Violence.
This is an ornate spiny lobster (Panulirus ornatus). Apparently this is what it takes to impress the girls in lobster world.... Works for me.

"We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it." Excellent piece by @danmcquillan
https://www.danmcquillan.org/chatgpt.html

I suggest you read the whole thing, but some pull quotes:

"ChatGPT is a part of a reality distortion field that obscures the underlying extractivism and diverts us into asking the wrong questions and worrying about the wrong things."

We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it.

@bookstodon.com Goliath - Tochi Onyebuchi, remarkable, striking, reminded me of Dhalgren. Highly recommended. Though a challenging read. Seems right to have read it this month, it's future history but like so much good sci fi it feels close, like current history through a teargas lens.
Very much a fan of this piece on the dying virtue of modesty, by David Mitchell: "I’m not saying that you shouldn’t give a good account of yourself in a job interview. There’s a time and a place. Job interviews are atypical human interactions, awkward but necessary, where the usual conventions about how to behave are suspended. Like rectal examinations. But we need to be sparing with such exceptions or you end up with the Oscars." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/feb/05/lets-hear-it-for-the-dying-virtue-of-modesty #boasting #PutASockInThatTrumpet
Let’s hear it for the dying virtue of modesty

From self-help books to Oscar campaigns, lots of people are telling us that self-promotion is good. Resist the boasters!
