"NEADS" Needs Puppy Raisers, Mentoring Massachusetts Kids, and Training for the Trades in Lexington - New England Weekend | iHeart

NEADS, based in Princeton, helps all kinds of good dogs live to their fullest potential by training them to be service and therapy dogs. Before they can go through that training, they need a solid upbringing. Heather Romanoff, the Manager of Raiser Operations at NEADS, talks with Nichole about their search for puppy raisers in Worcester County, and what volunteers can do to set these puppies up for success. PLUS: As we exit the height of the COVID pandemic, our region's kids need mentoring, guidance, and support, now more than ever. Mark O'Donnell, President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts, has details on the need for mentorship, and how you don't have to be perfect to boost a child who needs a friend. ALSO: Many people are choosing a different career path post-COVID, with the trades becoming more and more popular. Nancy Houle at Minuteman Technical Institute in Lexington has details on their upcoming workforce development courses, which many can attend for free thanks to some new state funding.

One thing that I really hope comes out of this whole #HouseSpeaker ballyhoo: more C-SPAN access!

The transparency and access we have had with the cameras still under their control over the past few days has been wonderful. This should continue.

(Did you know that, once a Speaker is elected, they often choose to censor C-SPAN's access to camera? More from Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/01/05/c-span-cameras-house-speaker-vote/)

With the House in chaos, C-SPAN shows footage Americans don’t usually see

With no House speaker, the C-SPAN livestream can catch interactions normally left out of view for the American public. Here are some remarkable clips.

Former Attorney General Maura Healey has just been sworn in as the new Governor of #Massachusetts. Former Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll has been sworn in as Lieutenant Governor.

Healey is the first woman to be elected to the governorship here in MA. She is also the first openly LGBTQIA+ person to serve in the role.

Healey and Driscoll are the first female Governor/LG team to lead Massachusetts. #mapoli #politics #newengland

Who feels like some French Toast? The NWS advises:

"Burst of wet snow Friday NW of I-95 and especially central and interior northeast MA where a few inches are possible. Ptype may be more rain southeast of I-95, but could briefly flip to wet snow in some spots during the heaviest precipitation."

McCarthy loses a fifth vote. And a little while ago I saw the first crack in Democratic unity. Some Democratic congresswoman from Ohio said maybe the Democrats ought to reach some bargain with McCarthy. Good Lord. AOC was talking about a bargain, too, although she's got substantial concessions in mind, like Democratic control of a few committees. Not a bad idea, which means it isn't going to happen.

Keeping an eye on #mapoli today. Governor Charlie Baker's last full day on Beacon Hill's been busy already. He's exchanged ceremonial gifts with Governor-elect Maura Healey, and he's getting ready for his "lone walk" at 5.

Baker's also got 90+ bills to sign (most hyper-local), but one that didn't make it to his desk from the last session was a ban on "revenge porn". The House was unable to agree to Senate changes in time, so lawmakers will have to start over again this session on a new bill.
