Buried in the House NDAA bill is automatic registration for 18-26 year olds for selective service, i.e. a potential draft.

Amazing how we can automatically register young people to go to war and die but not automatically register young people to go to the polls and vote. smh

@aworkinglibrary @nazhamid It’s a little inconsistent that we give these machines “training data” but then call them “machine learning” systems instead of “machine training” systems.

However, is “learning” exclusive to acquiring or developing knowledge. We describe children as “learning to read” when they’re effectively doing the same pattern recognition training that some of these machines are doing.

We are more prone to anthromorphizing LLMs than to humanizing suffering humans

When I was a kid the low bar for an elementary school student was copying the encyclopedia entry to write a school report.

As an adult, I see that Google, which once had the noble mission of indexing all the world's knowledge, offers bullshit answers it scraped off Reddit.

Dickens: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
AI writing assistant: This should be changed to "It was an average time."
@jeffluszcz @burritojustice Where are New Hampshire middle schoolers supposed to take field trips to during their War of 1812 lessons?
This is a reminder of how much modern tractors rely on satellite and internet connections. Many farmers can't or won't plant right now bc tractors have been highly automated to increase yield. Rows are planted so tightly together that humans can't navigate them w/o killing crops
This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/
@jwz @burritojustice It doesn’t solve the entire mystery of a screw, but this thing gets you part of the way there. https://a.co/d/31YYCVR
