Dissociation is likely when the individual has a chronic sense of feeling unsafe, which may be due to unpredictable parental behaviour, feeling powerless, having no control over one's life, experiencing unfairness, living in an environment of secrecy, and being isolated from the outside world, often in an attempt to hide the dysfunction that exists behind the closed doors of the “apparently normal family”."
