Kein Durchblick beim Thema Energie? Ruedi Widmer erklärt es uns.

I keep thinking about camcorders. Imagine being a videographer for the first 10 or 20 years after camcorders went on sale. You'd go through the following thoughts:

"Everyone can make movies? This is going to kill my job."
"Haha, this is trash. My job is safe."
"Quality is getting better but it's still trash."
"It's trash but people are kind of happy with it? For recording memories and having fun it does what they need."
"OK, quality is actually getting decent, you could maybe shoot a pro movie on this. Worried about my job again."
"What is my job? Now that anyone can shoot videos, it's obvious that it's not just pointing a camera and making a movie. It's knowing light, angles, sound, timing. Both the camcorder, and my job, have their place."

Anyway, back to coding.

Here it is.

Edit! A lot of people engaged with this and it's clear many are in the same/similar positions. I therefore thought it might be useful for me to share that Open University offer quite a few free online certified training courses - www.open.edu/openlearn/free-courses

There is also a wealth of (free) training material (for learners and teachers) available from MIT at ocw.mit.edu and (free) certified online courses at openlearning.mit.edu/courses-programs/mitx-courses

Everything from HR and management to neurodivergence, aerodynamics and astrophysics, Python, genetics, diversity and inclusion, infosec, STEM, law, Black-centric courses, research methods, languages and education, Scottish Parliament, etc. 😊

If, like me, you've been actively seeking a job recently, you will likely be aware of the impact Ai has had on the job market. Virtually every other day is a msm news story about qualified and/or experienced people making hundreds of applications without getting anywhere.

Personally, although I've had a few interviews that didn't quite land (one I didn't really have enough experience, the others were pulled or lost funding), I've now applied for over 300 jobs over the past year. At this stage I'm quite philosophical about it and recognise it's not a reflection of my value.

Along with all the other current crises, there is now a looming employment and skills crisis. This is being framed as a benefits culture led by overdiagnosis of neurodivergence. Which makes me so very very cross it's difficult to put into words. I know that's not true. You know that's not true. *They* know that's not true. It's just a convenient demographic to throw under the bus to detract from the catastrophic damage being wrought by this new gold rush.

Urgh.

I've started typing this out a few times recently and always deleted. It's not something I feel very comfortable talking about. But I am really struggling with this and I figure that if I am there might be others. And I believe in visibility and not suffering in silence - been there and it was awful.

I know things will change at some point. And I know I've spoken to some of you separately irl about this (and thank you so much for your support), but just wanted to fire a beam out across Fedi to anyone else in this shitty situation. You are not alone. Always happy to chat offline if this is kicking your ass as much as it is mine! X

The people using Keynote (wholly owned by Apple Computer Inc.) never had to deal with this kind of heckling, I noticed.

I developed the HTML slides after a particularly hair-raising episode: I had been subcontracted to give classes at a large investment bank, and been provided with class materials in the form of a PostScript file. I spent the thirty minutes before the class frantically sneaker-netting a PostScript reader to the 1980s-era classroom computer, and then hand-editing the raw PostScript to keep the reader from displaying the slides upside-down.

After that I said “Never again. Every computer has a browser that can display HTML, so I will do my slides in HTML and display them in the browser.”

This worked perfectly, and had unexpected benefits. If I got to the venue and discovered that the people in the back of the room couldn't read the text, no problem, I'd just hit control-+ a few times and let the browser take care of it.

Using HTML also makes it easy to stick the slides on my web site for the whole world to share and enjoy, whether or not they have Apple™ Keynote™.

I've never regretted it. Slides I wrote in 1994 still work the same, without change or update.

Ghostty just surpassed Terraform in stars (my previous most-starred project I started). It took Terraform 12 years to reach 48K. Ghostty did it in 1 year. It's bigger than Terraform in active usage, too. I take it personally when people doubt I can outdo my past.

I can take credit for starting both, but not for ongoing development (for the successes and failures). Neither project is a solo endeavor. I'm still extremely actively involved with Ghostty, but there's also a team of a dozen maintainers. Terraform I stepped back and stopped working on it directly like 6 or more years ago.

I consider stars a vanity metric and I don't care about it at all except in this narrow case. I'm a super competitive person (in general), but particularly/especially against my past self. There's no one I like "winning" more against than my past. So, this is my one exception for caring about stars.
