Initial thoughts on the tiny XTEINK X4 ereader

What fits nicely in my hand and gives me hours of pleasure? A tiny ereader!

Here it is.
@neil I've been considering one since seeing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWw5NKUx40o

@neil Ooooooooo.

Sad about no backlight, as I mostly read in bed in the dark to help me fall asleep - as such, the phone is sadly ideal for that (I set it to be dark background, warm toned text on top). Would love a non-phone alternative.

@sarajw Yes - I am using a secondhand Tolino Shine (which has a backlight) for that!
@neil Oh nice! Hadn't seen those before.

@neil

that's *squee* adorable!

Can I pop a shell on it and write code on it? 😆

@gumnos It is an ESP32-based device, so probably with a bit of tinkering!
@neil Oooooo, you got (back) my interest then! 😁
@gumnos
@neil Despite the e-inkroll it's still a better photo than they picked.

@neil You just lost The Game.

Now we're even.

@neil Looks nice! I have a very old Kobo Mini that I refuse to get rid of because I love the form factor so much. (From the photo, your new device is taller and narrower than the Kobo Mini.)
@scott The X4 is much smaller than the Kobo Mini.
@neil whoa!! You have both!! 😁
@scott I went through a phase last year of buying broken ereaders and fixing them. I have given most away, but I still have a few :)

@neil any tips on what works well with the Kobo Mini (firmware, syncing…)?

I have read about alternate firmwares but don’t know what I’m doing and didn’t want to brick it forever.

(Not that’s it’s super useful currently on the original software…)

@scott I just use the stock firmware.

If you want to try KOreader, then it is worth a go, but it didn't appeal to me.

I sync using Calibre and a cable, but you could look at calibre-web-automated, which can sync wirelessly with Kobo devices.

@neil omgggg I've been wanting one for so long 😭😭😭😭 what a gorgeous little thing
@neil Rick Rolled with an ereader, that's a first for me.
