On Hard Fork last week I said the end state of Twitter will be that every reporter gets a 🤡 badge. This is the next step on that journey

In case you needed some #NightMareFuel, this is what the oesophagus of a leatherback sea turtle looks like on the inside.

Those spines keep jellyfish in but let sea water out. Unfortunately, they also keep plastic bags in, making them very vulnerable to plastic impaction!

Hello Mastodon Science. My lab at Yale studies innate immune defense against respiratory viruses. Some of our recent work has focused on viral interference, a phenomenon in which one viral infection can temporarily protect from another. This article discusses the field, and is thought provoking in light of the current resurgence of multiple viruses. https://www.science.org/content/article/competition-between-respiratory-viruses-may-hold-tripledemic-winter#.Y3fz7XHT75Y.twitter
Competition between respiratory viruses may hold off a ‘tripledemic’ this winter

Researchers say there is a growing body of evidence these viruses interfere with each other’s spread

Our initial census of #antiphage systems in genomes revealed that on average bacteria encode at least 6 anti-phage mechanisms. This paves the way for many interactions between systems.

So we decided to review the existing litterature about #synergy and #regulation of #antiphage systems.

Already cool stuff and clearly a lot more to discover :). Hopefully, this can help to think about how multiple systems coexist in a cell !
