In case you needed some #NightMareFuel, this is what the oesophagus of a leatherback sea turtle looks like on the inside.

Those spines keep jellyfish in but let sea water out. Unfortunately, they also keep plastic bags in, making them very vulnerable to plastic impaction!

@markscherz YOU PUT THAT BACK IN WHICHEVER FIRE OF HELL YOU FOUND IT IN MARK
@markscherz @ursulav In case you were wondering about turtle digestive systems.
@markscherz I'm pretty sure that's a young sarlacc.
@markscherz
I know this thing, it's from Arakis
@markscherz Nah. My worst nightmare somehow always seem to involve people rearranging my furniture without permission or just generally TOUCHING. MY. STUFF. But no worries, I have a good therapist. 😁 Turtle tummy (I know it's not but I can't resist the alliteration) is cute and interesting in comparison.
@markscherz Wow, super interesting! Thank you for sharing!
@markscherz this is definitely a one way street
@markscherz woah. That's horrific and quite cool! Are you going to put one on display in the new NHM?
@markscherz I think plastic is the nightmare, not good needed anatomy
@markscherz
Very cool! Any chance to add some blind person friendly caps on those images?
@markscherz Now I find myself interested in how they develop those spines and what they are made of.
@markscherz I don't think I will sleep tonight now!
