Saw a couple of these polyhedral fungi out on my mtb ride. Is #fungiverse a thing?

@JessTheUnstill in UK and DE, you wouldn't even see the bill for most situations. For the remainder, there are cases that are denied, but that's usually rare cases (still can be better, but a far cry from American insurance. Also, in DE, insurance is heavily regulated, and the UK does technically not have insurance at all, but a state-run health system with an optional private insurance on top. I've seen both parts work as advertised on multiple occasions)
@JessTheUnstill (the UK is currently *trying* to get worse, tho. And I'm skipping over some situations that are worse than they ought to be. In general, the system works as advertised, tho)

@jay_peper @JessTheUnstill I can confirm this for DE. Even unemployed people have basically the same insurance status as I do, as fully employed person have.

Also I heard Americans drop parties when they heard that an ambulance was called and it cost like 30 euros or sth (instead of drawing a multi digit bank debt)

It suffices to say, the US system scares the shit out of me... but it's something the US people have to get along in all ways possible including politically.

There's more than health insurance, you know.
@ppxl @jay_peper

@JessTheUnstill @jay_peper true. My bike was stolen this year and my lousy home insurance payed the full bike price because I still had invoice from 10 years ago. My cat was at the doctor's and we got the coverage almost immediately.

But yes there's more than health insurance but it's the most drastic difference between US and DE in these terms. Nobody should go bankrupt bcs of unfortunateness that could happen to everyone.

@JessTheUnstill @ppxl yes, sorry. I had assumed health insurance. But I have positive experience with other forms of insurance as well (and some negative. But then you can literally get insurance to sue your insurance, which I've heard can work surprisingly well). In general, regulation does work. Freedom needs the freedom from the rich and powerful. And only a strong society can provide that
@JessTheUnstill @ppxl (i was simplifying the insurance to sue your insurance there. It's a generic thing called Rechtsschutzversicherung, literally justice protecting insurance. If they believe you have a good claim, they will bankroll the lawsuit. It's a bit of a middle class thing, tho
@ppxl @jay_peper @JessTheUnstill having insurance is one thing, actually getting the health care is an entirely different thing.
Just ask disabled and/or trans people.
And of course it's not just health care.
@ninafelwitch @ppxl
Yes, the state of trans health care is horrible. But even then, there are many trans people who do get their transition from the insurance or the NHS. Myself included (Yes, I know I got lucky. I got access to a trial in which they were actively making it less horrible(asterisks apply))
@errorman same in EU (Germany)
@ninafelwitch i got more money from insurance that i paid in contributions
@JessTheUnstill @amalia22 who called them insurance companys instead of NPO - Not paying organizations
@Nachtflug @JessTheUnstill It's a one-way street. Your money goes into their pockets. You get nothing in return. NOTHING.
