I believe DEI and accessibility benefits everybody; that cats are good communicators if you just listen; and that singing together makes life a whole, whole lot better.

“You're not going to lose your job to artificial intelligence; you're going to lose your job to a human who knows how to use AI better than you.”

I created these images of creepy babies with the AI image generator Craiyon V3 (craiyon.com), using the prompt, "laughing baby dressed as a CEO, working on a laptop and surrounded by piles of money."

Note that, while the prompt mentioned neither race nor gender, Craiyon presented only white males, retaining the blatant bias of its human developers. And as with many other AI image generators, they're still lousy at drawing hands as faces (although chances are the developers aren't any good at that, either, LOL).

Mr Shiva Kitty wishes you a happy #caturday!

@Beautifulpublicdata is the latest marvelous rabbit hole I've fallen into during my GIS cartography learning (which pairs wonderfully with my presentation design skills!).

Enjoy!

My boi, Shiva.

Technically, he's not "my" cat—Shiva and his sister, Sita, live with their humom, and we were housemates for five years. Shiva slept with me every night, and as far as he's concerned he *is* my cat. Were only it so. At least I get to kitty sit, and when I do, Shiva attaches himself to me like Velcro. We are forever bonded. I love this boi 😻

AI is already having an impact on our industry. My hope is that we may have a say in how it is guided, moving forward.

AI is already impacting creative industries. My hope is that we may have a say in how AI is guided, moving forward. Fingers crossed: I've applied to represent the Presentation Guild at the US Copyright Office sessions on Artificial Intelligence as effects creatives. If accepted, I'll be addressing the USCO at the May 17 session on Audiovisual Works. Grateful to USCO for taking seriously the need to mitigate the negative impact of AI on our professions. AI is amazing; mindfulness and harm reduction are imperative. All sessions are via Zoom, 10am–1pm PT/1pm–4pm ET Attendance open to all; must register in advance. Details and registration links: https://copyright.gov/ai/listening-sessions.html • Literary Works, incl. Software, took place April 19 • Visual Arts: Tuesday, May 2 • Audiovisual Works: Wednesday, May 17 • Music & Sound Recordings: Wednesday, May 31 Recordings of all will be made available. The USOC will also offer future ways to give input. #ai #artificialintelligence #AIimpact #CopyrightProtection #CreativeIndustry

Spring 2023 AI Listening Sessions

OMG my once perfect handwriting has become atrocious as my dysgraphia's reasserted itself, but I delight in my mind racing in prep for today's PPN Conference on Diversity in Publishing, where I was a panelist in the session "Examining Bias in Design."

What an honor to share the stage w/Mike Nicholls and Nita Ybarra—people whose work and values I so very much admire. Thanks, Andrei Pasternak, for your thoughtful moderation, Emily Boyd for herding us cats, and Publishing Professionals Network for producing another inspiring conference!

I was supercharged by Keynote Speaker Alex Kapitan, founder of RadicalCopyeditor.com, on how we can celebrate differences and invite connections by using language as a tool not of harm but of caring and liberation, and the joy in doing so.

Thanks to all who attended. Your questions were wonderful food for thought. It warms my belly seeing so many embracing efforts to be more inclusive in the work we do. 💚

"Left-handed Dream" (1981) is one of my favorites of his:

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Left Handed Dream (Full Album, 1981)

YouTube

My intro to Ryuichi Sakamoto's music was during my first visit to Japan when I was a teenager: my parents took me along for an entire month smack dab in the middle of the school semester, and be it Tokyo or rural Shikoku, Mr Sakamoto's debut album, "Thousand Knives," seemed to be on every cafe stereo. On my subsequent visits, his music became the fiber of every dinner party and gallery show.

It wasn't only Ryuichi Sakamoto's music that influenced my own, but also his sense of what defines "beautiful music." His artful blend of traditional and non traditional sound sources conveyed imagery-rich, immersive stories—compositions that taught me that music is everywhere—which is why I collect "accidental" music, my favorite being the mesmerizing, rhythmic melody of the squeaky escalator at the 19th St BART station (I hate it when they try to fix it, and am thankful that they never succeed!).

I cried real tears today, my heart heavy with the passing a person who brought such beauty into this world.

Please feel free to share. I'm interested in what other groups are planning in response.

Also interested in similar actions by governments and organizations outside the US. This isn't only impacting my fellow Americans and I, nor are we luddites in this effort. This is a call for us all to band together to protect ownership of our creations and steer AI in a mindful and healthy direction.
