I believe DEI and accessibility benefits everybody; that cats are good communicators if you just listen; and that singing together makes life a whole, whole lot better.

“You're not going to lose your job to artificial intelligence; you're going to lose your job to a human who knows how to use AI better than you.”
— Rick Altman; Director of Rick Altman & Associates and Producer of the Presentation Summit (BetterPresenting.com)

I created these images of creepy babies with the AI image generator Craiyon V3 (craiyon.com), using the prompt, "laughing baby dressed as a CEO, working on a laptop and surrounded by piles of money."

Note that, while the prompt mentioned neither race nor gender, Craiyon presented only white males, retaining the blatant bias of its human developers. And as with many other AI image generators, they're still lousy at drawing hands as faces (although chances are the developers aren't any good at that, either, LOL).

Mr Shiva Kitty wishes you a happy #caturday!

My boi, Shiva.

Technically, he's not "my" cat—Shiva and his sister, Sita, live with their humom, and we were housemates for five years. Shiva slept with me every night, and as far as he's concerned he *is* my cat. Were only it so. At least I get to kitty sit, and when I do, Shiva attaches himself to me like Velcro. We are forever bonded. I love this boi 😻

OMG my once perfect handwriting has become atrocious as my dysgraphia's reasserted itself, but I delight in my mind racing in prep for today's PPN Conference on Diversity in Publishing, where I was a panelist in the session "Examining Bias in Design."

What an honor to share the stage w/Mike Nicholls and Nita Ybarra—people whose work and values I so very much admire. Thanks, Andrei Pasternak, for your thoughtful moderation, Emily Boyd for herding us cats, and Publishing Professionals Network for producing another inspiring conference!

I was supercharged by Keynote Speaker Alex Kapitan, founder of RadicalCopyeditor.com, on how we can celebrate differences and invite connections by using language as a tool not of harm but of caring and liberation, and the joy in doing so.

Thanks to all who attended. Your questions were wonderful food for thought. It warms my belly seeing so many embracing efforts to be more inclusive in the work we do. 💚

The government agency where I work is hosting a blood drive in response to the worldwide shortage caused by the pandemic. If you are able to do so, please consider donating at your nearest blood bank or Red Cross. Better yet, ask your workplace to host a drive.

Come for the sense of civic pride, stay for the cookies!

Very sad to learn of cancer taking from us the wonderful Photoshop/Lightroom author, Martin Evening. Back in my many years as Sr Designer at Peachpit Press, Martin was one of my favorite authors to work with, always gently cajoling me to think a bit further beyond where I was standing. Some of my best work was thanks to our collaborations. I am ever grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a solid, kind person as Martin. RIP.

When your housemate organizes the pantry.

Yesterday was Thank God for Ducks Day. Now on its +/-45th year, I've been attending the past 36. For this year, which took place up in Gold Country, I made Tea-Smoked Duck Breasts w/spinach-persimmon-pomegranate salad, which shared the table with gobs of goodies incl a mountain of Peking duck and duck chilaqueles, plus pumpkin cheesecake, 2 apple pies, lemon bars, and enough bubbly to fill a lake.

Speaking of mountains, we were momentarily graced by the appearance of a mountain lion! RRROWRRR!
