(4/4) It's really strange that the system ran normally with the faulty RAM and only some checksums were wrong. And it's strange that #ZFS had no problems with the broken RAM. I hope the system will run again without any problems with new RAM and the #FreeBSD test can continue.
(3/4) Then I tested a different external hard drive. The same thing again. Some of the checksums were different. I was too lazy to test the hardware before installing #FreeBSD. Now I'm testing the hardware with #MemTest86. And yes: the RAM is no longer reliable. It's a shame, but luckily I've now identified the problem and new RAM isn't too expensive.
(2/4) I have been using #ZFS under Linux since about 2011, but the support was always a bit tricky, especially at the beginning. Now I have started testing some of my data on an external USB hard drive. Around 10 TB. The data is on a ZFS pool that I also created and use under #Ubuntu Linux. All files on the external hard drive have checksums. For a few files, the checksum on the new #FreeBSD home server did not match. ZFS did not report any errors. Strange.

(1/4) Don't be lazy, test your hardware regularly and have checksums of your data.

I have been using #Linux for my servers for many years. Since #Debian Woody to be precise. Later I switched to #Ubuntu Linux. I am currently building a "new" small home server with some old hardware from 2017 and thought it was time for something new: #FreeBSD

The installation and setup went without any problems. #ZFS out of the box. Nice.

Oh, as a topic wanderer myself (I don’t like the word “generalist”), I love and endorse this comic.

i think the internet would be better if "web designers" were banned from having internet faster than train wifi

A confession: in order to become better at computers, I did many illegal things.

I carbon-copied expensive documentation and standards.
I copied software and shared copies of games, compilers and tools.
I made unlicensed copies of the UNIX operating system source code from AT&T.
I connected illegal hardware to the national telephone network.

I had to. My heart demanded it. I was not alone.😌
