So this is my second trial of Mastodon, making me somewhat new but not seasoned. I was a very active Twitter user at one point, but I evolved into more of a lurker. There are many things I love about connecting this way, but it hasn't all been good. More hopeful for this community though.

#introduction I'm a techie. I love cartoons, horror, concerts, karaoke, video games, and #rollerderby. I'm black, queer, autistic and here to hang out.

#BlackMastodon if you’re wanting to find one another, we have to boost one another. Not unlike twitter’s early years, it took awhile for people to find one another. It doesn’t help that the desktop version has more features, is a bit easier to navigate than using some of the mobile apps — at least on the #iOS side. (Remember, that was a shortcoming on early twitter too.) It’ll happen. #BlackTwitter #twitterMigration

#FediTips (or perhaps #FediWarnings?):

Something I discovered the other day on accident is in Mastodon and derivative software, if you are sending someone a DM, and you spontaneously tag someone in the middle of the message, *that person now has read access to the DM in which they're mentioned*. This is a neat feature if you're using it on purpose but could be awkward if you're just trying to link an account and suddenly that account can see you talking about them…!

"Because, in a world where Creation and Communication are heavily commercialized, the act of Creating a Thing or building a community that doesn’t enrich our corporate overlords is a radical act."

This is a work in progress, a living document.

Any Black folks on this app?

Today I needed a simple lightweight way to interpolate environment variables into a template without installing heavyweight dependencies (CI/CD) and I remembered envsubst (only 1.45 MiB expanded in Nix)!

echo "Hello user ${USER} in ${HOME}. It's time to say ${HELLO}!" > welcome.tmpl

env HELLO="willkommen" envsubst < welcome.tmpl
Hello user xxxx in /home/xxxx. It's time to say willkommen!
