So this is my second trial of Mastodon, making me somewhat new but not seasoned. I was a very active Twitter user at one point, but I evolved into more of a lurker. There are many things I love about connecting this way, but it hasn't all been good. More hopeful for this community though.

Something I discovered the other day on accident is in Mastodon and derivative software, if you are sending someone a DM, and you spontaneously tag someone in the middle of the message, *that person now has read access to the DM in which they're mentioned*. This is a neat feature if you're using it on purpose but could be awkward if you're just trying to link an account and suddenly that account can see you talking about them…!

Today I needed a simple lightweight way to interpolate environment variables into a template without installing heavyweight dependencies (CI/CD) and I remembered envsubst (only 1.45 MiB expanded in Nix)!
