I have officially left the UK's Office for National Statistics to join the BBC as a visual data journalist!

Delighted to meet new colleagues on our team yesterday.

New #dataviz adventures start properly on Monday πŸ₯³

SO excited! πŸ€“

Journalists shouldn't just leave Twitter with no migration plan. They can bring along their audiences and connections if they get organized. Reupping something I posted early this year:

Journalists (And Others) Should Leave Twitter. Here’s How They Can Get Started

Summary: Elon Musk has demonstrated contempt for free speech in general, and journalism in particular, with his behavior at Twitter. He is also demonstrating why it is foolhardy for anyone to rely …

So, I've been reading some fascinating books by an author called Nassim Nicholas Taleb which explore how randomness and black swans (very rare, unpredictable, disproportionately impactful events) can (and should) seriously affect our understanding of the world.

Keen to understand more about these topics and how they affect our ability to tell (and show) meaningful data-driven stories.

Recommendations for further/similar reading? (Except Nate Silver's Signal & Noise, which I must read) πŸ€“

Hey friends!

πŸ“š Every other week, I post a review from my Data Viz Bookshelf on LinkedIn and on my blog.

Data Rocks NZ

I've been quiet for a long time on social but I've also been busy at work. Here are some of the fruits of my recent labour, my 1st major project for the ONS in the UK.

Very much a team effort & just to say: I didn't make the visuals here as I work more as a data journalist than a visualisation developer in my current role. Nonetheless, it's been a brilliant collaborative effort and I am proud to be part of it:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/censushealthdisabilitycare/

The geographic divide in general health, disability and unpaid care: Census 2021

Despite improvements, parts of the north of England and areas of Wales had some of the highest proportions of people who reported being in bad or very bad health, were disabled and limited a lot in their day-to-day activities, or spent many hours per week doing unpaid care. How does your area compare?

OK, I get how so many new, and recently returned, data viz folks are enthusiastic about finding and visualizing data about mastodon.

But, maybe, it might be a good idea to actually engage with other folks on mastodon as people? At least for a while?

The whole, landing in a new place and digging for data to viz about it? Wow, just kinda a bit colonial. No?

Seriously, please unplug your broadcast a bit, and actually connect with folks here.

So, I have completed my migration across from #twitter and used a couple of tools πŸ”§ to help me in the process while I was waiting for my data to arrive.

Thanks to past experience with the excellent #rtweet package for #r & some basic #python scripts plugged into #tweepy -> I scraped my own timeline as an insurance policy & reset my timeline - including likes - using my developer account access. πŸ₯Έ

Should I visualise my old data? πŸ€“

Masthead

Masthead is a Social Networking Platform. With our new features, users can wonder posts, connect with each other, post photos, videos, earn money from their content, plus live stream. Plus we have introduced MobAds, also with this your content can be monetized. Added to this , their will be a Suggestions Tab at the top of the page , if there is something that you want to see , suggest it there , and we will look at it , SuperChat is already on the top One thing we were unable to do with the previous version was to develop, that's not the case with the new version , the sky is the limit!

Feel kinda torn about #Twitter as it's generally been a positive experience for me. I eventually learnt to avoid habits like doomscrolling, morbid fascination with rage-engage controversies, algorithm driven rabbit-hole quests, etc.

It's also been great for my burgeoning career & sense of vocation as a data journalist. I've made some lovely contacts. Heck, I found my 1st full-time data journalism job there!

So I'd be sad to lose it, but I'm optimistic about a future with #mastodon πŸ€“
