Crypto is so "safe:"
Hackers and scammers are constantly stealing it.
If it's on an old laptop and you lose it, tough luck.
Politicians are gaming the system, pumping/dumping, and scamming, making the "value" fluctuate wildly.
It has zero intrinsic value.
And now, self-serving and self-interested politicians want the US public to use our money to buy crypto so private investors can profit.

NYTimes: "The cryptocurrency exchange Bybit lost $1.5 billion to North Korean hackers last month"

To curb climate change and environmental damage, one vital step is getting rid of factory farms and greatly reducing meat consumption.

You would think an organization like the World Wildlife Fund would support that cause.

But you would be wrong. 😡

From 2010 to 2022, US meat production increased by over 13 percent while the industry successfully staved off calls for regulation at home and on the international stage.

None of this is terribly surprising — it’s largely the same denial and deflection playbook run by Big Oil to avoid responsibility for climate change, with the usual suspects helping: industry-aligned academics, front groups, loyal politicians, and social media influencers.

But among those allies are also some of the world’s largest environmental organizations.

Take the World Wildlife Fund, or WWF, a green giant with over $600 million in assets. WWF and McDonald’s are both founding members of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, a network of beef processors, fast food chains, and other industry stakeholders.

For its collaboration, McDonald’s makes sure WWF is well compensated. The company has donated millions of dollars to WWF-US.

From 2017 to 2022, WWF-US brought in up to $28 million from various meat, dairy, seafood, fast food, restaurant, and grocery companies, including Tyson Foods, Cargill, Burger King, Costco, Walmart, Red Lobster, Chobani, and Dairy Management Inc., a dairy trade group.

WWF is hardly alone. Two of the other largest US environmental organizations — the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) — also closely collaborate with large meat and dairy companies, ranchers, and trade groups on a range of initiatives.

But outside observers, along with some former and current employees at EDF and WWF, argue that those initiatives often do more to improve the companies’ images than the environment.

Factory farming is terrible for the environment. Environmentalists are sharply divided over what to do about it.

For anyone in the US who can’t see the point in getting out to vote maybe they need to see a few of the Project 2025 training videos and see just how extreme and destructive a Trump administration will be.

Leaked Project 2025 Training Videos Show Former Trump Officials Detailing Plans to Dismember Gov’t

As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tries to downplay his connection to the far-right policy agenda known as Project 2025, ProPublica and Documented have just published dozens of training videos by the group that show how the conservative movement is gearing up for the next Republican administration. It’s an effort led by the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank and other groups to remake the federal government, including by replacing civil servants with thousands of partisan political appointees who would help carry out the extreme policies envisioned by Project 2025. Many of the people who crafted the policy blueprint are former top Trump officials. The training videos include discussions about undoing climate policy, combatting diversity efforts, denying freedom of information requests and more. “The first time that Trump … got elected, his operation was very unprepared. They did not have a bench of people ready. There was chaos, there was confusion, and that set back that administration for perhaps months, maybe even a year or two,” says ProPublica reporter Andy Kroll. “If he is elected again, that will not be the case.”

The Israeli military has bombarded nearly every inch of Gaza with US-made bombs. Israeli forces have dropped over 70,000 bombs on Gaza in the past ten months — making it the deadliest bombing campaign in the 21st century.

Omer Bartov in today’s Guardian

> The sentiment that now prevails in Israel similarly threatens to make war into its own end. In this view, politics is an obstacle to achieving goals rather than a means to limit destruction. This is a view that can only ultimately lead to self-annihilation. The second reigning sentiment – or rather lack of sentiment – is the flipside of the first. It is the utter inability of Israeli society today to feel any empathy for the population of Gaza.

> Of course, the Israeli public long ago became inured to the brutal occupation that has characterised the country for 57 out of the 76 years of its existence. But the scale of what is being perpetrated in Gaza right now by the IDF is as unprecedented as the complete indifference of most Israelis to what is being done in their name.

The long read: This summer, one of my lectures was protested by far-right students. Their rhetoric brought to mind some of the darkest moments of 20th-century history – and overlapped with mainstream Israeli views to a shocking degree

Many like to mock the Musk here on Mastadon, but we should not underestimate the serious power this guy wields. He is the new Murdoch. Reportedly financing the Trump campaign to $45 million a month and intimating if Trump fails to win he will push the 'stolen message'. We already know he is keen to push ideas of civil war from what he's just done re. UK riots.
