Most people don’t want to be rich, they just want enough not to worry anymore
If you're interested in the changes behind the scenes, Ive added some basic notes here around using Codeberg pages and Zola: https://fluids.rocks/posts/how-this-site-was-built-again/ #zola #codebergpages #blog
How This Site Was Built (Again)

Another way to build and maintain a blog-centred website.

The average annual cost of owning a car is $8000.

Depending on the model it can range from $5000 to $12000 though.

If local governments really wanted to "ease the pressure of living costs" on their populations, they'd fund #PublicTransport, #cycling and #walking, allowing people the freedom to NOT own a car and automatically putting 8 thousand dollars in the pocket of every ex motorist.

#carDependency is financial ruin for cities.

Messing around with this terrain again... and in science code :D I'll update you all when it's working!

#snowSafety #landscapeAnalysis #hazardAnalysis #WIP #python #QGIS

Science random: a flooded snowpit on Arctic sea ice.

What's going on here? On drifting pack ice, a snow load can depress the ice surface below sea level and it floods. Here, there's a chunk of ice tilted down so it slopes to below sea level as the snow load thickens - it is a wind deposit behind a small ridge (also places were ice is jumbled up).

It's the same procedure and logging as an avalanche study pit, although always did a density and salinity profile as well.

Working on moving and perhaps resurrecting what *almost* became a blog a decade back. Changed tooling, made it a little simpler and hopefully a little more accessible, and it's now on Codeberg. Hoping to get a few useful snippets, guides etc onto a page, where I'm able to. These days posts will be more likely to cover spatial and spectral data analysis/software, Python and occasional self-hosting notes than what once would have been geochemistry and geology.

Will live at: https://fluids.rocks [edit: updated domain] #codebergpages #blog

Autodidact. Geochemist and data junkie. I like understanding how things work, mountains, lifting heavy things, and strong coffee.

Wrote about maintaining a human web and how the human.json project & the 'AI' blacklist for uBlock made browsing the web a bit better.

Maintaining a human web: human.json & the 'AI' blacklist

My dislike strong opposition to engaging with β€œAI” generated things, be that texts, images, code or anything else is well-documented. But avoiding the mindless slop is still getting harder, as it seems that more and more developers, writers – and of course SEO-scum trying to make quick buck – can’t...

All I ever really wanted to do in life. Get by enough to regularly duck into the woods like the big feral telemark skier that I am.

And help people.

Serious offer: i know how to make electric bicycles, electrify analog bicycles and repair broken electric bikes/scooters. If you are in #Brisbane, feeling fuel pinch, and want to get (back/newly) on two wheels, hit me up. Parts to electrify a bicycle cost a few hundred dollars, no need to spend $4000 on a store bike if you don’t want to. I even have some analog bikes we could use for parts. If you have access to ex rental scooters from defunct rental companies, i can also help resurrect these.

Will hold a weekend #ebike #escooter #micromobility workshop if there is interest.

ETA: if not in brissy i can recommend parts to buy

ETFA: if you have a good bike but a dead battery, this can be resurrected for around $100

ETEFA: your replies tell me I'd better pump out a blog post on this subject pronto.

A little #introduction post...

Hey there. I'm an #outdoors sort of guy, like my #hikes, #diy, helping the family with the #garden and landscaping.

I'm pretty quiet until I need to be. A little brain spicy and somewhere on the rainbow... not exactly sure to be honest.

Living down in Aotearoa, or New Zealand as you might know it.

Keen to make some connections.
