Happy Valentine’s Day #lichensubscribe
I actually stumbled upon this while walking in my woods this week. A pleasant surprise.
We've also been playing around with #haiku as a creative point of intersection with nature - so I'm going to share one of mine today. It's about Japanese beetles, popillia japonica.
Beetles eating leaves
Defoliators supreme
Only structure remains.

I think this is Xanthoparmella cumberlandia but I could be wrong. I’m comfortable calling this a rock shield lichen though. It’s on a north facing rock surface and it’s about 20cm in diameter. (It’s a big rock)
But I could be wrong 😎 so if you have alternative suggestions I’m open to them. I submitted this to iNaturalist so I’m sure I’ll have some better information about it soon.
Submitted for the approval of the intersection of the #LichenSubscribe and #Mosstodon society.
I'll have more lichen coming soon - it's actually my homework (aw shucks... /s lol.)
I think I'm going to be especially obsessed with lichen next. I can feel it buzzing in my brain.
I also absolutely love this poem from Jane Hirshfield
"For the Lobaria, Usnea, Witches Hair, Map Lichen, Beard Lichen, Ground Lichen, Shield Lichen"

Got to attend an Apple Tasting virtually today. A fundraiser for Not Far From the Tree, in collaboration with the Ben Nobleman Park Community Orchard.
The timing wasn’t perfect, (because I have to help the child go to bed) but I could attend more of it and participate more because it was virtual.
Anyway, it was fun. I’d do it again. I love virtual food events.
