Still figuring it all out

I’ve followed @AbandonedAmerica’s photography for some time, but only just now listened to the podcast. I really liked the one on Gary, Indiana: https://anchor.fm/abandonedamerica I’m glad I support him on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/AbandonedAmerica/posts).

The author is a mensch, a good guy.

Well, it's Groundhog Day, again.*

“Only in America do we accept weather predictions from a rodent but deny #ClimateChange evidence from scientists.”

To be clear, it’s not about getting women & girls excited about science. We are! It’s about keeping us there.

Scientific institutions weren’t built by women or for us. Cultural norms & social mores often discourage us from staying. Retention numbers from earning a PhD to becoming a full professor are nearly identical now to when I was early career in the 2000s. /2

“If current trends continue, women & men will be equally represented in the field of biology in 2069. In physics, math & engineering, women should not expect to reach parity for more than a century.“

“The data show that women are systematically denied the chief currencies of scientific credit: publications & citations.”

Equity for Women in Science — Cassidy R. Sugimoto, Vincent Larivière

Equity for Women in Science is the first large-scale empirical study of the global gender gap in science. Analyzing millions of scientific papers, the authors show that women are undervalued for their labor in science as measured through publications and citations. The data also reveal how the scientific community can promote equity.

One of our favorite #Mastodon introduction posts, from @fields:

"Mastodon is similar to Twitter in a lot of ways, but with some critical differences. I assume that you already know how Twitter works — this is an intro to how to think about some of the things that are different, and some things you might want to do right away to make your life easier."

A brief introduction to Mastodon - Adam Fields - Medium

This is adapted from a presentation I gave to a few people, and my main takeaway from that is that there are some confusing differences between how Twitter works and how Mastodon works. This is my…

This week, a bailiff stopped me and acted as though I was in the wrong place as I walked through a portion of the courthouse that is restricted to attorneys and judges.

I'm an attorney. I was wearing a suit and conducting myself just like every other attorney in that area.

This is not the first time that has happened. I can think of several other instances in various counties where courthouse security has assumed that my black skin means I must not be an attorney.

I'm tired of it.

#Sunset tonight was so far beyond spectacular I don't even have words. I often stand and look at these colors--which are often 360* around the horizon--and can't quite figure out how they can be real. Yet here they are, present every night, different every night. Almost 8 months of watching, now, and it still boggles my brain.

This beauty is one of my favourite Grandfather oaks, and perfect for #ThickTrunkTuesday — he can be found at Folly Farm Centre, near Stowey in Somerset if you want to visit. I took this just after sunrise on a frosty January morning in 2020, before the world changed.

"Her"

For fifty years, I looked in the mirror
And saw me.
I didn't think much of it.

Then one day, I realized I wasn't seeing me
And I thought a lot about it.

I made some choices, and some changes
And in time, I looked in the mirror
And saw "her".
And it was beautiful.

I kept going
And every time I saw "her"
I smiled and knew it was good.

Then one day, I realized I wasn't seeing "her".
I was seeing "me".
And I cried with joy.
