Following on @pluralistic's brilliant article about the "enshittification" process of companies, I added in something that I thought was missing from Cory's analysis: the role of "The Friedman Doctrine" that the only thing companies should work for are maximizing profits for shareholders... and highlighting how that leaves out not just other stakeholders, but the important variable of "over what time frame."

How The Friedman Doctrine Leads To The Enshittification Of All Things

We recently wrote about Cory Doctorow’s great article on how the “enshittification” of social media (mainly Facebook and Twitter) was helping to lower the “switching costs&#…

I'm older so I remember things. Everything you see happening today should be understood this way:

The top tax rate used to be 90% in order to prevent the really rich from destroying democracy.

The corporate tax rate was 50% because corporations exist to serve society.

AND the inheritance tax was really high to keep family dynasties from gaining power over us.

You know what I notice about the pics at the World Evonomic Forum in Davos? The HEPA filters in every room. And that they’re all sitting around in their coats. Because the windows are probably open (for ventilation).

Not to mention that we know a negative PCR test was required for their badges to work.

We now know how to gather safely. We’re just treating those things as luxuries afforded only to the rich, while our kids’ schools are full of every respiratory virus.

@mikester I appreciate it. I hope you don’t end up taking a hit for this.

Saw a toot that said Charles Schulz avoided politics in Peanuts except for book burning, and that's not true. For example, the WW1 strips with Snoopy and Spike were political, Snoopy as a pilot has a heroic fantasy about being a celebrated ace in the war nobly dueling in dogfights in the air while Spike, who is in the infantry being forgotten and fed into the meat grinder on the ground, just wants to go home

"You can't recycle your way out of climate change. You can't shop your way out of monopoly. Systemic problems need systemic solutions.

What the individual can do is think of themself as part of a movement. If you join a movement, then you and the people with you can make change. But not you on your own."

I’m going to tell you the story of the man who solved a crime.

Not, like, a cop who put together the clues and got his man, but a person who took a crime as old as civilization and fixed the problem where it got you in trouble.

The man: Artur Virgílio Alves Reis.

The place: 1920s Portugal.

The crime: Counterfeiting.

The problem he fixed: That the money is counterfeit.

(This is going to be a long 🧵 . Just trust me.)

Dystopian futures that seem kinda plausible:

It Can't Happen Here - Sinclair Lewis
Stark - Ben Elton
Parable of the Sower - Octavia Butler
Mister Touch - Malcolm J Bosse

None of them perfect. But more so than a lot of the usual suspects you see nominated.
