Leo Arriola, Oren Samet, and I have a languishing paper on citizen inclusion and attitude formation in peace processes with data from just prior to the Myanmar coup. What to do with it? Well, we were so lucky to get fantastic suggestions from the very best at #uclconflict & #EUI_EU this past week! (Hard to imagine how people get work done in places like these with views like these...)
So much cool stuff is happening at the US-MEX Center at UCSD - like survey work on perceptions about democratic institutions https://usmex.ucsd.edu/research/democracy.html - great to get to catch up! #Mexico #democracy #survey

Our final #TBT Standards Discussion this month highlights academic/practitioner partnerships. Written by EGAPer @MorganOHolmes, the piece uses @USAID Center of Excellence on Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance as an illustration of 1 model that exists. https://egap.org/resource/sd-partnership-models-usaid/

Thinking broader relationships, too, there is also cool new research just out in top journals, including a few focusing on these countries that I just visited, including this new @jop piece by @KaiMThaler, Lisa Mueller, and Eric Mosinger on Chile: https://doi.org/10.1086/724967

And this new @Governance piece by Hernán Flom on Argentina: https://doi.org/10.1111/gove.12779

I'm so grateful for the many researchers who spoke to me in Argentina, Chile, especially about how their institutions have changed over time as well as on the dynamics in the current institutions.

For example, in Argentina, I learned a lot about actor dynamics, which also has bits written about it in this commentary by Fernanda Page Poma: https://www.diagonales.com/opinion/la-represion-como-resultado-de-las-interacciones-politicas_a6310a4cd61eb3c3d36f8d66d

And this piece by Mariana Gutiérrez and Gabriel Costantino: https://scholar.google.com.ar/citations?view_op=view_citation&hl=en&user=6twdJUkAAAAJ&sortby=pubdate&citation_for_view=6twdJUkAAAAJ:Wp0gIr-vW9MC

La represión como resultado de las interacciones políticas

Qué hace la policía en una manifestación depende de decisiones que toman políticos, jueces y jefes policiales, y los costos y beneficios varían según el contexto

I’m also very happy to be part of the steering committee for @EGAP’s priority theme on Crime Reduction & Police Accountability, chaired by the incomparable Sabrina Karim and Santiago Tobón, which brings together great people and resources, including research in Latin America: https://egap.org/our-work/priority-themes/crime-prevention-police-accountability/

Got to spend some fantastic time thinking about the police in their many forms in Latin America.

There is some great work on this, like the amazing recent @EGAP Metaketa set of studies on community policing, led by Graeme Blair and an amazing group, with some of this work done in Latin America: https://egap.org/our-work/the-metaketa-initiative/round4-community-policing/

Hot off the press! 🥞

My article with @ShaunaGillooly, "Grammar of Threat: Governance and Order in Public Threats by Criminal Actors," is now available from Comparative Political Studies.

The article asks why criminal actors - which usually benefit from maintaining a low profile - choose to publicize threatening messages, making them visible to audiences far beyond the targets of the threats.
