@markstos think it adds on top a few more nice aspects. Especially if you freeze the versions of the inputs, you can rebuild the system again. Or build a variation for a VM to test tweaks.

Reflection on #NixOS vs #Ansible

Ansible gives that ever-so tempting option to make changes directly on the servers. Things you might justify as minor, unimportant, or urgent. Whatever the reason, you can easily sync the server state with Ansible later, right?

Later: One some unrelated task, all these changes show up in the dry run and are a distraction and drag to deal with.

#NixOS forces you to make the changes only to the "single source of truth", eliminating this class of issues.

I've finally setup a new #Mastodon server in my @homelab!

Can we just stop using Discord and go back to using forum sites?

I realize it's (comparatively) super easy to set up, but y'all realize it's just going to bite us all in the ass as soon as someone at Discord decides they need to turn up the profit ratio?

It's a ticking time bomb. The whole thing is going to follow the enshittification process, and anything of value on there is going to be lost/sold/destroyed.

New post! The EU Cyber Resilience Act is now (almost) final, but what does it ACTUALLY mean for open source? It is mostly good news, and there are real opportunities to use the #CRA to our advantage: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/eu-cra-what-does-it-mean-for-open-source/
EU CRA: What does it mean for open source? - Bert Hubert's writings

The final compromise text of the EU Cyber Resilience Act is now officially available, and various open source voices are currently opining on it. This is a complex act and other parts of the open source world (like the Eclipse Foundation and NLNet Labs) have been hard at work to advocate with the EU and member states to get a CRA that is good for open source. I’ve also been highly critical.

@mmeier And for anyone who wants to move away from wildcard certs and use actual hostnames, just be aware of #certificatetransparency . While it's overall a healthy thing for the internet, you could end up giving any would-be attacker a list of subdomains in your #homelab.

At #37c3 they have IRC, and Matrix for text and for voice they setup their own LTE/2G/3G/SIP/DECT network where you bring whatever phone-like device and pick a 4 digit phone number.

Meanwhile in the USA for #defcon they just paid Discord money and told everyone to accept their privacy policy, and even the DC Privacy Village asks people to sign up for Slack and Google.

People ask why I fly to CCC from the USA. It is because that is the closest place to find a thriving hacker culture.
