#SoloInstanceThoughts

Honestly, not being able to actively participate in multiple communities without secondary accounts is the only large strike against the system that I've come across.

"Pick One Interest" isn't a great model (at least for me... realistically I could concieve of joining instances for tech, software dev, anime, photography, music (that one alone would fragment heavily)

@chrisbiscardi My understanding (limited as it is at the moment) is that if your gamedev account follow's your primary, then your primary toots show up in gamedev's federated timeline? (think that's right)

If your gamedev account boosts it, they show up in the local timeline.

I have no idea what the etiquette is for something like that (definitely let me know if you come across anything)

@chrisbiscardi This is 100% the conclusion I'm reaching. Do you have the gamedev account boost your primary account or are you treating them as truly separate?
@serow I mainly want my own domain. I’m not sure there many other benefits to essentially a solo instance, but it’s something I want to try

@chrisbiscardi What I want to see is exactly what the experience is on a solo server. You loose a bit from the local and federated timelines, but I wasn’t really using those (though to be fair, being on mastodon.social makes those un-useable really)

You can setup some Relay’s in the admin panel, so I’m going to try those out

@chrisbiscardi I got everything setup now (it’s empty but it’s live — @mark — in theory just waiting to initiate the account move process)

The docs are really good, so I have to give them credit for that.

My plan is to just start using that account as my primary for a bit before initiating the move (I only have 14 followers so it’s not that big a deal anyway)

Currently exploring wether or not to run my own instance (unfortunately all the SAAS options aren’t accepting new subscriptions given the current environment)

Went with the Digital Ocean droplet method and have to say I’m impressed. Yes, it’s BYOS with sendgrid and s3, but pretty turn key for the most part.

Currently exploring the admin interface to see what’s up… Not 100% sure I’ll dive in yet

I very strongly recommend that recent arrivals here, like me, stop right now and read this end-to-end:

https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

The title is: “Home invasion :
Mastodon's Eternal September begins”

Note that I am *not*, as I would on Twitter, including the handle of the author. Just learning but I think that is fedi-appropriate.

Home invasion - Mastodon's Eternal September begins

The fediverse is dealing with a huge wave of Twitter people bringing toxic ideas with them.

Apparently there will be checkmarks all the way down

For all it's advantages and faults, #Mastodon was not built to be a *new* Twitter. It was built to be *not* Twitter.

That distinction is important.
