Currently exploring wether or not to run my own instance (unfortunately all the SAAS options aren’t accepting new subscriptions given the current environment)

Went with the Digital Ocean droplet method and have to say I’m impressed. Yes, it’s BYOS with sendgrid and s3, but pretty turn key for the most part.

Currently exploring the admin interface to see what’s up… Not 100% sure I’ll dive in yet

@markphilpot curious to see if you do. There's a v4 release coming that should be a small test of migrations and such from what I know

@chrisbiscardi I got everything setup now (it’s empty but it’s live — @mark — in theory just waiting to initiate the account move process)

The docs are really good, so I have to give them credit for that.

My plan is to just start using that account as my primary for a bit before initiating the move (I only have 14 followers so it’s not that big a deal anyway)

@chrisbiscardi What I want to see is exactly what the experience is on a solo server. You loose a bit from the local and federated timelines, but I wasn’t really using those (though to be fair, being on mastodon.social makes those un-useable really)

You can setup some Relay’s in the admin panel, so I’m going to try those out

@markphilpot yeah, as far as I can tell, you also lose out on the ability to share your toots with a community unless people have advance knowledge of your account and have followed you already.

It's why I have an additional account on the gamedev mastodon in addition to this primary account.

@chrisbiscardi This is 100% the conclusion I'm reaching. Do you have the gamedev account boost your primary account or are you treating them as truly separate?

@markphilpot I haven't quite worked out what to do with the second account yet, or what the most "mastodon-y" way to use them together are.

So far all I have figured out is that if I want to interact with the gamedev community, I need a way to get toots onto that instance rather than leaving them only here.

@chrisbiscardi My understanding (limited as it is at the moment) is that if your gamedev account follow's your primary, then your primary toots show up in gamedev's federated timeline? (think that's right)

If your gamedev account boosts it, they show up in the local timeline.

I have no idea what the etiquette is for something like that (definitely let me know if you come across anything)
