Unfortunately the `Explore` section is completely devoid of content (except for the "For You" tab)

It woudn't want to pull in content from other instances into my own (a la relays) but having a view into other instances while still residing in my own so I can directly follow or reply would be awesome.

#SoloInstanceThoughts

So following a hashtag does nothing if you are the only one on an instance. I've followed a few and see nothing in my home timeline but when I do a search in other popular instances (that have people that I follow) there is lots of activity.

Not 100% sure of the implementation, but it appears there is no pulling in of hashtag content from other instances...

It seems like the storage usage (both DB and S3) are stabilizing 👍

I need to institute some backup tasks, but overall I think this might be sustainable in the long term

#SoloInstanceThoughts

I had some cool ideas of creating dedicated users to represent activity on other platforms (e.g. anime and manga that I'm tracking over on Anilist)

The limitation is that Mastodon doesn't support "quote posts" (for lots of reasons that I won't go into here). I wouldn't be able to quote post that activity with some additional commentary

(e.g. "What an awesome episode" Quote<Post>)

I didn't realize until now that "relays" are different from "instances" -- I went into this thinking I could relay from any other instance to populate my instance's local timeline.

Turns out... not the case.

There are an extremely limited number of active relays and it is obvious it's a feature that's not really used at all.

#SoloInstanceThoughts While mastodon has support for webhooks, there looks to be only two events supported.

A shame really... Would love a full suite of webhook events to play with.

- If a ruby version upgrade is required, it would be helpful to direct to any supporting documentation (esp w/ the DO droplet)

- Why does rbenv insist on compiling from source?

The server left to it's own devices while I was on vacation. I'm going to attempt to do some of the CLI cleanup later this week just to see if I can keep things reasonable.

Obviously more data is needed to establish trends, but for following ~50 people in 12 hours:

Storage Usage
DB: 3MB
S3: 350MB

What I didn’t realize is that my instance effectively caches all the media from my timeline, not just the images from my own posts.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to clear the cache from the admin screens — I also don’t know if the cache is a fixed size or will continue to grow.

Something to keep in mind

Obviously some people are using the Federated timeline because I woke up this morning and some of my posts last night had been boosted.

Right now there isn't an instance/community where I feel the need to actively participate. I could definitely see that changing down the road, however.
