Lotta talk about replacing Twitter.

The better dialogue is how to get people to re-evaluate how they engage with the internet.

Personally, I'm convinced of two things:

- You can't 1:1 replace Twitter unless it's a similar top-down walled garden.

- Most people probably shouldn't want a Twitter replacement, since Twitter is bad for us.

Instead of finding/molding/creating a replacement, we should encourage people (and ourselves!) to focus on what they like most about internet interaction.

The speed with which people are suddenly moving to a new platform – thousands in one weekend from Ireland alone – would suggest it isn't just about Musk's changes. It's like everyone's been waiting for the excuse to make a change, and Musk's scorched-earth tantrum finally created the critical mass to get everyone moving. #TwitterMigration #IrishTwitter

Potentially very useful resource here. A #searchable #directory of #fediverse accounts here. Servers that have opted in get indexed it seems (I think I read somewhere that profile details are otherwise normally quite slow to sync across federated servers?).

Anyway, onto the pile it goes!

@Rondakaysen I absolutely see the prospect of that.

That said, the local and federate timelines are firehoses of reactions from a pretty broad swathe of people.

The US elections next week (or cultural events, we've an annual television one coming up in Ireland) will be telling in terms of what they offer.

That said, even with just thousands, rather than millions of users, the breadth of reaction is informative, or so I've been finding (not that I'm a journalist...).

@david_colquhoun This is the closest thing to a general directory I've seen.

Profile details link across in dribs and drabs as servers federated and information is summoned by a user clicking, after which it becomes available locally (I *think*), but the link above seems to provide details to servers that have opted in, and the big ones mostly have.

Hi friends, kind request to #IrishTwitter but would ye mind using #CW for far-right content you share, esp transphobia and racism?

Only takes a second, but I know myself and some of us came here to escape the dogwhistles/ constant dehumanisation/ 'look at me, an 'ally' pointing this out for the nth unoriginal time for clout' of twitter.

If you're sharing it, you're amplifying. Please give us the option to choose not to see it, if you must have a hot take about it.

OK, so many of you new follows are posting/boosting kind of things I don't wanna deal with on Sunday afternoon me time.

Pretty please, with a cherry on top, add content warnings to politics, war, news stuff. My brain can't handle too much outrage of the day, and I am not here for doomscrolling.

If in doubt, CW. Please and thanks.

@cameronpat @introspection Though isn't the "painless migration" the point here?

Precarity sucks and needs to be fought, but at least you can migrate your account from employment to employment (or settle into a public server for a while if needs be).

Building relationships without losing them between contracts. (Better just to fix the contracts though, absolutely.)
