Research for the Front Lines

I'm excited to be at the meeting of the International Society of Exposure Science on behalf of Research for the Front Lines.

It's starting off strong. The always awesome Élyse Caron-Beaudoin introduced the incomparable Donna Merger, who is describing community-based research that holds Canada responsible for the shameful mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows over the last 60 years.

#ISES2024

It's been so hot and humid in Montreal that even my houseplants are sweating! Or at least this Philodendron (?) seems to be, with a big drop in exactly the same spot on all its leaves.

Do lots of plants do this? Anyone have a good scientific explanation for a non-botanist?

Does anyone know the story (or have a theory) about the 🍉 in the #Atlassian email today? Subtle message of support for #NoTechForApartheid? Clueless accident? Something else?

Two people pointed it out to me today so it's getting noticed!

#Gaza

I've seen Rania Masri (North Carolina Environmental Justice Network) speak before and can promise this online event tomorrow (May 28th) at 7pm ET will be super powerful and will help people who care about environmental justice learn about ways they can show up in real solidarity with Palestine.

Research for the Front Lines

Do you want to actively support the fight for #climate and environmental justice in Canada?

#Research for the Front Lines is expanding our network and we’re particularly looking for people with backgrounds in applied science or analytical testing of environmental pollutants who can volunteer some labour to enhance the support we provide to #Indigenous Land Defenders and other frontline folks.

Research for the Front Lines

Research for the Front Lines supports the research needs of impacted communities and grassroots movements fighting for environmental and climate justice across so-called Canada. We offer the following kinds of support: -Funding for Indigenous and other directly impacted communities and individuals to lead their own research projects, on their own terms. -Volunteer research labour by…

Research for the Front Lines

We're so excited to announce this upcoming event!

Research for the Front Lines

Do you want to know what types of #pollutants are released and transferred in and near your community?

On Feb.7 at 12pm MST (2pm EST) Keepers of the Water is hosting a webinar with Canadian Environmental Law Association on Exploring Canada’s National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) - Promoting the Community “Right To Know”.

The NPRI is increasingly relevant to research requests that we receive at Research for the Front Lines, so we're encouraging our network to attend.

Would engineers find the use of "blueprints" just as irritating in this context?

"Frontloading is a planning process that creates DNA, a set of genetic instructions that tells a movement how to grow. Movements are living organisms, which means they require strong DNA to be powerful in the world."

Should I just work on accepting a non-scientific definition of #DNA? I don't think I could ever accept the use of images of left-handed DNA, however (and fortunately the image shown is correct).

20 yrs ago I was a new PhD student with an $18K/y scholarship, which increased to $30K/y when I managed to get a CGS-D scholarship from CIHR (+ $2K top-up from my supervisor’s research grant). Despite 52% inflation, many grad students are now making less than I did, and most post-docs are paid far less than the $70K/y I made with an NSERC-IRDF at Tekmira ($ABUS) in 2009.

Grad students and post-docs are the future of science and need a living wage!! #SupportOurScience
