β€œBefore you speak, ask yourself, is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve the silence?” - Sathya Sai Baba (I think)

Is autism self-diagnosis valid? Yep. πŸ’œ

Hey all, after reading dozens of research papers, and meta-analyses, and living through it, I made a thing!

I'd love it if you'd check it out! πŸ₯°

Update: I replaced the header image, now people can complain about the actual research instead of the thumbnail.

Also, before any more guys respond with gatekeepy opinions about my conclusions, try reading the paper first.

bit of radio silence from mastodon but I'm back! maybe.

@lindamciver this is a great article, shared with me by two of your Greens branch members and I had to come praise you for it.

thanks for having our backs.

would be a shame if something happened to it
Trying the "Virtual emergency department" service. The hospital nurse was pretty dismissive so trying to avoid going back
partner went to the hospital for severe tooth pain; they sent her home with one endone which has already worn off pmuch and said to go to the community dental clinic on monday. she's in extreme pain. what can I do? I'm in Geelong, no insurance and can't afford to go anywhere that's actually open on weekends
@engagedpractx not to mention all of the other people that also contributed their stories to the book. love to see such inclusive work
@engagedpractx it is a *gift* that we got a book like this, written by a queer Autistic who is so knowledgeable about not just Autism, but also has obvious experience with mutual aid, multiple marginalisation and activism.

Unmasking #Autism really articulates my own frustration with how people have assumed autism (and #adhd ) traits are gendered, when what's mostly happening is marginalisation.

like I know several cis men who have what's commonly referred to as the "female" presentation of autism and/or adhd. in almost every case they are also marginalised on some other level.

there's a particular way that we (as in ppl who can and do mask a lot) seem to be taught, or otherwise learn from society, that if we do not make ourselves small, quiet or otherwise useful, Bad Things Will Happen. that can happen to almost anyone through trauma and/or marginalisation.

@matthras
thanks for the reply! ngl I am a bit tickled by the idea of myself scuttling around covered in forks like some kind of human-sized hedgehog.

it's not even social stuff that impacts me necessarily (though it does sometimes), it's more that other stuff, life admin and the need to sustain my human form requires so much effort that I don't have energy left over for the social stuff that I actually enjoy.

it's like how Odo from DS9 can only maintain his solid form for a set time before needing to spend a bit of time as goo in a bucket.

regardless it's an interesting framework to think about and try to apply
