Wrap Up 2025
February Part 1 of 4:
It was time to definitively say goodbye to the Sacred Valley of Peru.
We picked up our stored bikes packed in cardboard boxes and all our belongings in Urubamba and boarded the "Peru Hop" bus to set off on a long journey. The plan was to reach Lima by bus, with some multi-day stops to visit Arequipa and two other places along the way. With Peru Hop, we could choose how many nights we wanted to stay at the three places, and they secured space for our bikes in the bus and safe storage places on the way.
The first stop after a night ride by bus was Arequipa, the so-called "White City." We had booked a hostel for 3 nights because we wanted to go on day tours and hikes to 'El Misti' βone of the three volcanoes around the cityβ and into the famous canyon, the Colca Canyon. However, due to constant rain and landslides, we could not go anywhere and were kind of stuck in the city. The city was nice to see, but it seemed to be more suited for good weather, as most restaurants and cafes had their tables on balconies, in the patio or on the sidewalk in front of the buildings. We couldn't figure out if this rainy period was normal or not, but according to the internet, Arequipa has a desert climate, with sunny and dry weather throughout the year.
So we visited the 'old town part' of the city with its nice buildings in colonial architecture made of sillar, a white volcanic stone, each of these days and tried all restaurants and cafes that served gluten-free and vegan food...
