Even though it has a very wide range, this is the first time I have seen a pectoral sandpiper (Calidris melanotos). It appears to be rare in Ancash, at least in the highlands.
Aunque tiene un rango de distribución muy amplio, esta es la primera vez que he visto un Calidris melanotos. Parece ser raro en Áncash, al menos en las zonas altoandinas.

Somewhere in the forest down below Machu Picchu we stumbled upon this Andean guan (Penelope montagnii). I suppose that it is worth mentioning that guans are, surprisingly, not very closely related to turkeys (which are more closely related to chickens!) For me it's always a good sign when guan's are around because it means that there is probably not much hunting going on in the area.

A rare taruca/taruga (a.k.a north Andean huemul-Hippocamelus antisensis) from the Vilcabamba in Cusco. We usually only find these deer at very high altitudes (4700-5000 meters). These two seemed bigger than the ones we find in Ancash (although that might just be because they were closer). Taruca are not tame at all and generally won't let you anywhere near them, but these seemed genuinely curious about me.

The smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani) is a common cuckoo of deforested regions in Amazonia. This one clearly wanted its picture taken.

Este fue un "lifer" para mí e incluso me dejó tomarle una foto. Canastero de Dorso Rayado (Asthenes wyatti), Vilcabamba, Cusco.

This one was a lifer for me and it even let me take its photo. Streak-backed Canastero (Asthenes wyatti), Vilcabamba, Cusco.

Parece que de alguna manera es un buen pájaro navideño.
