The FDA just approved a new type of long-acting HIV drug: a small molecule that disrupts the virus's protective shell. A good time to revisit my piece from 2017 on the longgg slog to developing capsid inhibitors: https://cen.acs.org/articles/95/i31/Conquering-HIVs-capsid.html
Um, cool science journalism fellowship alert. Some years ago, I got to spend 3 weeks at the Toolik field station in the Arctic circle and it was a truly amazing experience. Antarctica, though! Go get that, science writer friends. https://casw.org/news/casw-announces-antarctic-expedition-reporting-opportunity/?fbclid=IwAR1-tYdRgMZG84MxXO9pwsQfyr27mlREwhY4ZWaKE9jXsW7nEKjIKU7YOh0

Trying to be better about posting my pieces here. My column from last week on the first time a drug that relies on a newer form of Crispr gene editing called base editing has been used in a human--and it put 13-yo Alyssa's cancer in remission. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-12-13/crispr-gene-editing-breakthrough-brings-cancer-cures-closer
Another Crispr First: New Treatment Wipes Out Teen's Cancer

Next-generation gene-editing was used to create a therapy that attacked a 13-year-old's stubborn leukemia.

Hello Mastodon, I'm a science journalist and chemistry writer, currently at C&EN. I'm trying to figure out this platform - any advice is greatly appreciated.

When you've spent the day talking to pediatric infectious disease doctors about invasive strep A infections and your kid wakes up in the middle of the night with a fever and terrible sore throat... She's fine! Because the vast vast majority of kids have garden-variety sore throats. But doctors here are keeping an eye on a little bump in more severe strep A infections, which as of last week had taken 16 children's lives in the UK. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-12-19/rise-in-strep-throat-infections-should-worry-parents
Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Over at the blue bird site, "we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter." That rule apparently also includes...simply sharing your handle for mastadon or Post. What the what.

IMPORTANT: Those at-home tests you’ll be able to order next week won’t arrive by Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or New Year’s. BUT! If you have private insurance you can walk into most drug stores and get 8 free at-home tests at no cost PER INSURED PERSON, EVERY 30 DAYS.

On today's Daily, I talk about the "tripledemic" -- a winter in which RSV, flu and Covid collide and crash our health care system, or politely take their turn, but still add up to a rough season

In the United States, three big respiratory viruses are competing for attention.
