Lovely #HoustonWeather right now, BUT Jones Forest (N edge of The Woodlands) is doing a controlled burn on Friday Jan 13—so if (like my mom) you’re especially sensitive to poison ivy/oak/sumac, you'll need to stay inside or upwind all day.
UGH - Did you know that if you're using Google Authenticator, it's tied to a particular DEVICE and you have to EXPORT your data from that device BEFORE you overwrite the device or transition its contents to a new device? Well, now I know. Everything else I used Google for is cloud-based, but not this. I don't even remember what I used it for. Guess I'll find eventually... Here endeth the rant. For now.

This amazing poem, “The Seven of Pentacles” by Marge Piercy, was shared with me on FB by @MonicaCMiller and is now one of my favorites. And great for a new year thought.

Saying not to bother with the favourite button on mastodon because it doesn't affect any algorithm is like saying not to say thank you to someone because no one else will hear.

Stop thinking in those old social media ways of engagement and visibility and algorithms and reach and audience and start thinking about being social.

And BOOST! It's how you saw this, probably!

A favourite is a nice thanks, a boost lets everyone else discover the great thing you discovered too!

Our neighbor may be in a quiet game of chicken with our HOA and/or constable. They got a new basketball hoop for Xmas and set it up in the street in front of their drive. The HOA clearly forbids keeping hoops in your drive overnight, but this is in the street. And the constable doesn’t usually come by at night unless called. So until a constable happens by or someone complains, I think they’re just going to leave it there.

This year I wrote, edited, designed, and self-published two chapbooks of poetry. They’re very different in inspiration and tone, but I’m pleased with how both turned out.

You can buy both of them at Portland’s own queer-owned bookstore, Bishop & Wilde: https://www.shopbishopandwilde.com/used-books/genre/zines

It’s always such a relief to make it to #Festivus. I have completed a couple of feats of strength this morning (and more yesterday getting everything in from the patio before the storm). My grievances for the occasion:
- people who monetize other people’s creative work without permission or compensation,
- AI art bots,
- overly aggressive auto-fill.
Just leaving it at that for now. #happyfestivus #fortherestofus

"'Facial recognition is bad. It's really bad. It's a poor system for verifying identity or intent, it's overly permissive, and it trains us to be okay with having our face scanned.' [Max Eddy]"

"The idea of intent is important to unpack. When you enter a PIN or even place your fingers on a fingerprint reader, you're taking explicit action and you at least have an inkling what it's for. But face scanning can happen passively without you showing any intent much less consent."
