I spent hours and hours trawling through the sites of some of the world's best web developers, and despite the horrors I regularly experience in my daily work in Big JavaScript Territory, what I saw left me hopeful:

Alex Russell on browsers, standards, and the process of progress.

“We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living.

It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian-Darwinian theory, he must justify his right to exist. [...]

The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living.”

— R. Buckminster Fuller (March 1970, _New York_ magazine)

When evaluating any technology I understand why it’s important to ask “how might this benefit me” but it’s more important to first ask “how might this harm others”.

Not In Our Name is a group of cis women who have published a statement protesting against the systemic, political and media attacks on trans people. It focuses on rejecting the fallacy that attacking trans people (trans women in particular) is anything to do with protecting women or with feminism.

If you’re a cis woman and would like to support them, you can sign the letter here https://chng.it/QCvdH587zM

Just a reminder for con organizers, even outside immigration risks, this is genuinely all that is still relatively safe for gnc attendees in America, 2025.
So my partner and I got notices in the mail yesterday that we may have been impacted by a data breach….. from a company that we have never heard of before, and never used, and they don’t even have the correct name for me. WTF?!?! I guess they bought our personal info from a shady and incorrect data broker, and stored it, and then got breached?

Three actions anyone can take RIGHT NOW if they do not already have an action they are taking to support folks targeted by ICE:

1. Donate or volunteer with LUCE Massachusetts at www.lucemass.org

2. Program the LUCE Massachusetts phone number into your contacts and favorite it so you can quickly call them if you see ICE agents in your community

Number of the LUCE Mass hotline: 617-370-5023

3. Get some Know Your Rights materials to send to your friends and neighbors.

You can get Red Cards and Know Your Rights materials here:

Red Cards / Tarjetas Rojas | Immigrant Legal Resource Center | ILRC

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The ILRC’s Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. Special thanks to our many partners who contributed translations in the various languages now available, making these red cards accessible to more individuals.
