Interested in Science/Technology, Bonsai, Language learning, and have some ambitions to eventually to learn the guitar if I ever stop procrastinating. I will repost (retoot) political posts and social issues from time to time. Favoriting doesn't constitute endorsement, will follow people back.

Most of my toots, including replies, will auto-delete in about 1 month unless I decide otherwise (usually bonsai posts).

The short video version of how I grew a cacao seed into a tree that produced seeds that I made into chocolate:
This is such a cute photo I've had saved for years. Sadly, I cannot find the photographer.

Indeed. Read this article, and the discussion in the thread.

Okay, folks, gather 'round, because you are not going to believe this one. My friend who is working at NASA told me this confidential news , but i can finally spill the beans: NASA is officially running NetBSD.

Yeah, you heard that right. Turns out, when you need an OS that can literally run on a potato *and* survive the vacuum of space without a hiccup, you do not mess around. They have been working under wraps with their deep space division on something they are calling "AstroBSD."

Apparently, the Perseverance rover on Mars? Yeah, it is not just taking pretty pictures; it is crunching data with a custom NetBSD kernel.

This just proves what foundation has been saying forever: "Of course it runs NetBSD!" From your ancient router to a rover on another planet.

Ooo, a (bad) scam!

I got a text from `wa . govfog . dev/mydmv` letting me know I owed $6.99 for "unsettled tolls".

That's odd...I don't have a car registered in my name πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

None of the buttons on the site work, and the mobile formatting is bad, but I bet the payment button works.

It would be a shame if their web host and payment processor banned them and they got busted for impersonating a government agency.

⚠️ Do not move your account to mastodon.cloud. If you know someone already on mastodon.cloud you might want to suggest they move to a different server.

-Mastodon.cloud's admin hasn't posted since Feb 2023
-There doesn't seem to be any moderation, really awful bigotry is still there months after being reported
-The server software is very outdated and full of unpatched security holes
-Because of all the above, many other servers have defederated mastodon.cloud

Scientists shocked to find lab gloves may be skewing microplastics data

Scientists may have been unknowingly inflating microplastics pollution estimates, and the surprising source could be their own lab gloves. A University of Michigan study found that common nitrile and latex gloves release tiny particles called stearates, which closely resemble microplastics and can contaminate samples during testing. In some cases, this led to wildly exaggerated results, forcing researchers to track down the unexpected culprit.

Fascinating. In 1865, Charles Darwin published "On the Movement and Habits of Climbing Plants". He was interested in the fact that grapevines produce either tendrils for climbing or bunches of grapes for reproduction. Depending on the environment, they could either climb or produce fruit. Alright, this is absolutely first world problems, but holy mother of healthcare, am I furious.

So, I saw a doctor in the #Baylor system (who have purchased most medical practices in the area), a few weeks ago. I paid the doctor at the time of the visit. ($165 after insurance). I knew there was a facility fee, but refused to pay it, because it's egregious.

I got an email this morning from Baylor saying I owed another $300 for facility fees. (I was waiting for the bill, so I could talk to someone about it.)

So I called and said "Hey, this charge is unreasonable, and well outside usual and customary fees."

And their response, as Bob is my witless was, "Our fees are defensible." Which means they had lawyers sitting up figuring out to the last penny what they think they can get away with.

Those lawyers never met me.
