Comets and their tails have come in all shapes and sizes. Some, like Comet Rosa seen in this post, are more familiar.
Comet Rosa (CC0, via Wikimedia Commons) as depicted in "The Comet Book," or "Comets and their General and Particular Meanings, According to PtolomeΓ©, Albumasar, Haly, Aliquind and other Astrologers." Published in 1587.
This book contains many such examples. Other images from this book can be found at the Public Domain Review: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-comet-book
This is my best photo of Comet C/2022 E3. This green comet passed Earth for the first time in 50,000 years. It was last visible in the night sky during the Stone Age. 48,000 b.c.e.
But we have had gray skies forever (of course right?).
