🎤 These Boots Are Made For Tracking 👢

I asked my niece what she wanted for #Christmas2023 and as is traditional she would like #ImpracticalFootwear. As the #FunAunt it is my job to provide such things.

The conversation that followed proves were related.

@dsri You mentioned you like to hear how people use the Compact Calendar. I use mine as a simple PTO tracker. It helps me avoid burnout and the end-of-year use-it-or-lose-it problem. If I ever see a long span that's too empty, I know I need to schedule some time to decompress. The year at a glance makes a stretch with no rest really stand out and reminds me to use the time when I need it.
ONG I have #grammarly because it does a nice job of catching missing words or typos but the "helpful" suggestions need to [expletive] right off! I said what I said in the tone I meant to use!
Is it bad that I am sitting in my cubicle singing quietly "🎵 I aaaaaam a little ball of stress 🎵 a little ball of stress 🎵 a little ball of stress. 🎵 I aaaaaaam....🎵"
Functional programmers get so close to perfection when writing code because they aim to write as little as possible, if they'd just stop writing any at all they'd ascend to a higher plane of existence (the outdoors)

Protip:

When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,

"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes

I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

@kitkendrick @mekkaokereke And nothing stings more than something carefully avoiding mentioning sexism or transphobia as a factor when it's painfully obvious. It spares us no feeling to just not mention it. In fact, that's usually the opposition's framing: ignoring the harm done. So what we're left with is a media environment full of un-CWed dogwhistles, and CWed antidotes. Plus the careless are still gonna boost the bad news without so much as a call to action.

@kitkendrick @mekkaokereke As someone on the short end of sexism and transphobia, here's where I struggle: "sexism" and "transphobia" as warnings don't actually help me. I don't know if it's _mentioning_ them, _showing_ them, _fighting them_, or _acknowledging them_.

I would love to put aside Yet More News About Transphobic Laws.

But I _adore_ a righteous and angry and artistic engagement with transphobia. Anger and joy mixed together is a powerful antidote: and it has the same topic.
