This day last year. 5 hours sleep and recovering from the blown tire the night before we bought two new ones for the trailer a few hours down the road in Sault Ste Marie. Also checked out the Big Nickel before leaving Sudbury. Pulled into a wonderful little motel at a reasonable hour of the evening just east of Terrace Bay above the shores of Lake Superior. We were now retracing our path.

lol of course all the Really Big Account people are going to Threads, which is unusably bad right now.

let me repeat again for the people in the back muttering about how terrible fedi software is for users: ITS NOT ABOUT THE UX. if it were about the UX neither BlueSky nor Threads would be getting *any* attention. both are *markedly* worse than Mastodon, and Threads is fucking unusable.

it is about power, it is about influence, it is about visibility, it is about celebrity. it is NOT about how "good the software is". the fediverse could double its growth with "better software" somehow and it would not matter for becoming the Next Twitter, because the Next Twitter has to have Ellen DeGeneres and Barack Obama on it and people like them will NEVER make any decision that isn't about celebrity and power.

the fediverse isn't built for celebrity and power. that is what many of us like about it. and that is exactly why it will never be an instantaneous hit among people with influence/power/visibility/celebrity/wealth.

long term, it's possible the fediverse grows to contain multitudes enough that it is impossible to ignore. but none of those people will come willingly. and a very large number of other people will never be happy somewhere that they cannot follow Ellen or Obama.
