The paper that popularized the idea of carbon capture as a way to fight climate change was heavily sponsored and shaped by BP. In reality, there's no conceivable way it can work. https://www.propublica.org/article/wedges-climate-research-bp-fossil-fuel-princeton
How BP Execs Influenced a Climate Study That Shaped a Generation of Global Policy

BP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

Two Minnesota solar farms swapped the gravel under their panels for native prairie and wildflowers. Five years later the native bees had multiplied twentyfold and were crossing the fence to pollinate the soybeans next door

Everybody's heard some version of the bad news about bees. Hives collapsing over a single winter, beekeepers watching half their colonies die off, a steady

Europe had at least 30 years to prepare for this (if I’m generous), really it’s more like 50+.

Politics, leaders and society failed.

Like in Austria (where I’m from) they’re not closing schools despite it reaching up to 40°C indoors because they don’t have any law for this case.

Torturing children and teachers instead of finally acknowledging that there’s an ongoing deadly emergency.

Pretending that everything is fine instead of finally acting to protect life.

A true boiling frog experiment.

To put things into perspective, I live in the literal desert in Arizona.

We currently have an official heat warning—it is cooler here than in France.

Spur released their report today on some data referenced in our story last week about the Popa botnet's connection to the publicly-traded Israeli firm Alarum Technologies/NetNut.

tl;dr: "Everyone worries about the apps on their phone. Almost no one looks at the ones on their TV. We scanned 6,038 of them across LG and Samsung; 2,058 were selling your IP address."

I’m officially done with takes on AI beginning “Ethical concerns aside…”.

No! Stop right there.

Ethical concerns front and center. First thing. Let’s get this out of the way and then see if thre is anything left worth talking about.

Ethics is the formalisation of how we are treating one another as human beings and how we relate to the world around us.

It is *impossible* to put ethics aside.

What you mean is “I don’t want to apologise for my greed and selfishness.”

Say that first.

Ever wondered how I create labels with the exact shapes of screw heads?

I use the "Schraubenkiste" font, perfectly designed for this task! Found it a few years ago and it's been super handy.

Grab it for free under the SIL open font license at: http://www.peter-wiegel.de/Schraubenkiste.html

It's easy: gay rights are human rights. If your company is directly associated with another whose CEO is notoriously anti-gay rights, you're supporting their agenda. It's not about "politics".

Framing this as "We just care about tech!" is childish, unethical, and demoralizing.

Incredibly disappointed by Kagi here.

(Also: I'd suggest they moderate their Discord so that our writer @nileane wouldn't continue to be harassed and ridiculed by their tech bro audience.)

Huge yikes. Kagi is now partnering with Brave to power its search results — and they seem to be dismissing their users’ concerns regarding this partnership with a company that’s notorious for being led by a proud anti gay rights supporter. Just as I’ve consistently advised against using Brave’s products, I now advise against using Kagi as long as it contributes to a homophobic business. There can be no neutral politics when it comes to people’s rights and lives. https://kagifeedback.org/d/2808-reconsider-your-partnership-with-brave
