My one-tweet Mastodon starter advice:

1. Pick a server where people are likely to post generally about stuff you're most interested in.
2. Follow interesting people on other servers, who will boost interesting stuff into your home feed. THEY are your algorithm.

<3 #neuhier

... though I'm a bit worried about the current situation if it's really true that the proportion of women authors in Transactions of #RoyalHistSoc was at its highest in the 1920s.

If true, then this starkly demonstrates the implicit bias (and preference for 'people like us') operating in closed-community journal systems (as #RoyalHistSoc had until allowing direct submissions in 2021)

Think of people around the world tonight who need Twitter to get their voices heard, to document human rights abuses and injustices, to get attention, expose war crimes, and more.

All of them could be about to be cut off because the world’s richest man wanted to own the libs.

General warning to all new users: most mastodon servers are going to perform poorly as they take on a lot of new users. Most servers are small affairs run by a single person. Things are going to be slow, and things are going to break.

Be patient, be respectful, and tip your admin.

It's going to be a rough ride in the fediverse for a while. These are strange times and no one was prepared.

Mastodon is strange and new, and it's uncomfortable here right now. Be patient, it's worth it.

so obviously i'm sad twitter died, mainly because i got a lot of my indexing jobs that way, so if you need to have a book indexed, hire me! (please reblog this academics)
I’ll be honest, for the moment, I’m really enjoying the fact that no one on here has but a couple hundred (at most a couple thousand) followers. I know this goes against an earlier toot of mine. But it seems like, while still small, no one is saying anything just for attention.
