This has cut both ways since: being a foreign academic in Germany can mean I get marked as an outsider who is arrogantly imposing trendy anglo perspectives, but it can also mean I'm so illegible that I get treated like a pure academic with no recognizable biases.
Am recently reminded of my first talk given in German on GDR history at the FU and one of the post-docs said it was a nice relief that since I was a Canadian we didn't have to litigate my family history for the first half of the Q&A.
