k I'm finally in a place where I feel like I can shift to a more narrowly focused instance, but I'm not finding one that speaks to me. How did you all find yours?

The only people who seem excited about mass VR adoption are managers. You can’t do much, it introduces intrusive mechanisms for workplace surveillance, it STILL doesn’t work well with glasses, and I have always gotten a migraine and I assume others do too (can you IMAGINE trying to work a spreadsheet?).

Beyond some genres like FPS and flight sims I don’t even see what it gets you for gaming, either. Who wants this?

Meta Quest Pro review: get me out of here

The $1,499 Meta Quest Pro, a more full-featured variant of the Quest 2 virtual reality headset, has intriguing ideas hamstrung by an uncomfortable fit and terrible software.

In Fallout 3 the Trains are actually a character wearing a train model as a hat. Engine didn't allow for vehicles, so this way they could reuse NPC movement code. #gamedev
My department is hiring an Assistant Professor of Social Data Science! I would love for this job to go to someone knowledgeable about open science, reproducibility, and meta-science. Our department is fun, supportive, and has extensive expertise in structural equation modeling, Bayesian stats, regularization, text mining, meta-science, and research synthesis. The campus has a small forest, and the city can be easily reached from Utrecht, Rotterdam, even Amsterdam. https://tiu.nu/21154

Back in 2010 #twitter launched their “t.co” link shortened. And I thought at the time how profoundly terrible that is. If the database and/or ability to look up t.co links ever changed, we would literally lose information. We will no longer know what URL was tweeted. It burns a huge hunk of internet history to the ground if we lose that. It was vain and shortsighted and stupid. Now in 2022, I wonder how many months we have left when we can resolve those links. And what happens to collective internet history when they’re done?

In another funny twist, what about trials or legal matters that hinge on the content of a tweet? And suddenly you can’t get the content of that tweet? Or where did that link point to?

Nobody saw this coming except for all of us who saw this coming.

Dear Twitter ex-pats. When we all flounced out of Twitter loudly proclaiming we were going to Mastodon this sent a message to trolls, nazis that they could set up servers & come here.

If anyone gets harrassed with hatespeech pls note that that is not the culture of Mastodon. Please report & block those users. If you notice a pattern from the same weird domain, block that domain, write a post of the server name w/ a hashtag fediblock so your server admin can follow up & block it for everyone.

Wait howwwwww many people does Cassian just murder on this show? #andor

If you download your #Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a #Python script to convert a Twitter archive to #markdown or other formats: https://github.com/timhutton/twitter-archive-parser

Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.

Seeing the report that twitter's CISO, chief privacy officer, and chief compliance officer all resigned in the same night. I can't help but wonder if there's a specific reason for all three to leave at the same time. And if there is, it's probably pretty bad.
